Question

Hey folks, I hope one of you know what needs to be done and the library is closed to study chilton. I have a '97 F-250 7.3l powerstroke, and the starter is shot. My problem is that I can't get the starter removed; there are 3 mounting bolts and 3 nuts for wiring. One of the mounting bolts seems impossible to remove. It almost looks like I need to take out the header or find a new tool (that I can't think of) in order to to move socket, or wrench. it is tight between frame and header. I am going at it from the bottom under the truck, seems to be the only way to access the starter. Does any one know what I am doing wrong, or what I need to do? Hope there is a smart mechanic that knows how to direct me. My feer is having to take it to the shop and then be told I need new heads and manifold, and etc. Thanks alot guys, all help is appreciated.

not sure if the same, but have changed many on gas engines. the top bolt is easiest to get by removing tire then use a long extension and swivel and socket from under the wheelwell.good luck

Don't remove exhaust manifolds! I have used a series of wobble extensions and a swivel socket to get that one, I adapted down to 3/8" to provide more clearance than 1/2" drive. You may want to put one of the lower bolts back in, that way the starter won't sag and rest on the tough bolt and it will spin out easier once you've broken it loose.

it seems that still wont be enough room! gonna have to make it to library tomorrow to see what I can learn. I may have to get creative but there isn't enough room for an extension either (don't think?). Any other suggetions, any one have to do this smae chore and same vehicle? am I just that incompetent? last one was rhetorical, thanx though!

It will come out, you have to piece together the right combination of extensions to get the right length and a swivel head ratchet makes a difference too. There are lots of worse ones. Man, I'm glad I don't do that anymore.
