Hair jigs

Turk

Recommended Posts

I went a little crazy for hair jigs this season down on Pool four, something about them they just flat out produce fish. I have a few spots in mind for the Croix where I might force feed ol' white tip a hair jig and minnow. Lindys rigs have done so well I haven't experimented much. Looking forward to the opener!

Keep catchin'

Hi Turk,

Sounds great! I used them & Griz Jigs on the Croix some around the Kinni & other areas with some success.

I agree, those Lindy rigs are pretty good... I use the #2 or 4 Red Octupus & a 7-8' leader with Leeches. Red fireballs work real good too.

Good luck...

ive been fishing the mississippi in pool 2 and we are catching 90% of our fish on fuzzy grubs by lindy tipped with a fat head. i am with on the hairy jigs, for some reason the walleyes like them alot more than just a plane hook with a minow.

FFL,

Thats a good jiggin spot, I'm thinking of a dragging type of presentation that's so popular on pool four. Ah Lindy rigs and leeches sounds like summer.

You aint kiddin there Turk! Deer hair jigs and feather jigs love them!! white, chartruese, orange all good. You can close your eyes and picture that jig poppin along with a big glossy eye watching it then that slight bump and away you go, such a cool feeling grin.gif! I've experimented in the past with even tying some hair or frilled yarn onto a bare hook that has worked well too kind of a poor mans hair jig or lindy. speaking of lindy's FFaL I too have been extending my snells on those tough bite days 5 to 8 ft seems it spooks the fish less if the bait is farther away from the weight. a blue #4 colorado blade with one electric orange bead in front and 6 behind then a hair hook tip with some tasty morsel. I tell ya guys my blood boils more and more till that sweet release of opener! \:D

Only 15 more days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!!!!

Hey icef21 nice eye!

I have a question, what do you rats prefer when it comes to hair jigs? Feathers, deer hair, combo plastic and feathers, plastic and deer hair? Curious, I like the fuzzy grubs and feather jigs and haven't fished the bucktails. Do they fall slower or undulate more? Just curious.

I did good on Griz's hair (not his real hair...) jig with some red in it. Not much success on the other ones though...

That would be a feather jig, if I'm not mistaken..correct? FFAL, I like your advice on the red fireballs. We need to get out this spring and pop a few fish. Maybe you can show me a few of your go to rigs, doesn't have to be a fishy spot you like, just want to learn more about the presentation. Hope all is well with you!

Hey tunrevir... Yes, that's right, it's a feather jig. Haven't used it in a couple years - forgot. I don't use them much, but I did catch some when I used it.

You got it, \:\) we'll hit that area we briefly discussed at the Forest Lake clean-up with 'em!!

Open water & opener is coming soon...

They are bucktails with sparse amounts of hair. On first impressions you'd think they are defective or ill produced. Keep Catchin'

We like to tie our own hair jigs, You can do different things with different hair (belly hair, tail hair, top coat and bottom fuzz) from the deer. I'ts alot of fun to play around. Something to do between seasons. Then we take the ones we made our even lures we modified and throw a line into a pool to see what action they have or if they are tuned right. Hard to find a pool durring the off season but some people at hotels will let you use their indoor pool if there arent any customers around.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just thought about this topic again, and realized they are hard to find in the Twin Cities, I do know though that Bob Moore's Bait and Tackle in Minneapolis has them. Again the ones I strongly prefer have little hair. For vertical jigging: 1/8 ounce is perfect for 10 feet or less, 1/4 ounce for 10 to 19, 3/8 ounce 19+ fow. Though sizes do depend on wind and current naturally. For dragging jigs (this technique hammers fish on the Mississippi, it is similar to rigging in the speed)you need to experiment, you want it heavy enough to be just above bottom. You should be able to quickly drop your rod tip an hit bottom with the jig. Keep catchin'
