I drive by this creek on my way to Ely. It has always appealed to me, but my overriding desire to get to the lake always takes over. Can anyone shed a light on this neat looking creek?

Much thanks,

Scott

With the drought going strong for the past couple of years, I would think it's pretty dried up most of the summer along with most other creeks it's size. I have not really spent any time fishing it though, so I couldn't say for sure.

Probably all the creek chubs you'll ever want. Some trophy 10 inchers possibly?

All good information, THANKS. A shame as they improved the banks and beds a number of years ago. Did look like brookie country.

I do like beavers and particularily suckers but that is a long drive from here.

B-side, here we come.

I use to fish it where it dumped into the Cloquet river with my cousin Michael when I was a teenager around twenty five years ago. We would get ocassional brookies, but had better luck with them at the mouth going into the river. BC

There are still some decent brookies in there. Definitely the closer to the Cloquet the better, but there is some great habitat and deeper holes that still hold fish. If you live in the Duluth area I wouldn't bother making a trip for it, but if you are driving by and looking for some quick action it is worth a stop. I have hooked up with some bigger than average brookies in there, especially closer to the Cloquet. Like I said though, it isn't worth making a special trip for, especially if heading to Ely.

Still in there after these last 2 summers eh? I drive over it so i may have to try it sometime. Is there any decent spots by where it crosses 53?

There is some DNR land and some tax forfeit land just upstream of Independence (where it enters the Cloquet). These last few summers have had a major impact on size of fish I'm sure, but normally not so much on numbers. Some of the urban streams in Duluth manage a fishable population, but those hot, dry summers seem to kill off the bigger fish. I fished Hellwig once last fall, and caught fish.

Have you ever come across a brown on Hellwig? My dnr trout guide says that they are in there.

I think there are browns in the cloquet so they are probably in there. There is a lot of public land to walk just outside of independence and a lot of opportunity in there. You should be able to get the fish data from the DNR if they shock that stream.

Finally made it back up to Vermilion after 20 days off.  The ice out from McKinley Park was in very good condition.  I walked out 5/8 mile with my portable in the morning and I didn't find any water or slush on the ice.  I had 14 inches of ice with only the top 1 inch being white.  The ice was a little bumpy in spots and smooth and slick in others.  Snow cover was less than 50 % as shown in the pictures below, looking back at the landing and out from the bay.  Many full size pickups were driving all over and there were a lot of larger wheel houses out.  I hauled my small skid house out with my side-by-side in the afternoon and was very happy to be in it after dark when the wind really started to pick up.  Felt bad for the portables around me that were picking up in those conditions.  When I drove off just before 7pm, the drifts were getting much bigger and there was much more bare ice than earlier in the day.   Fishing was quite good in the morning.  Best bite was between 915 and 1045.  The walleyes preferred the smaller rainbows and chubs and wouldn't touch a very large rainbow and shiner that I tried for a while.  The walleyes were quite small with the biggest being only 14 inches.  I did manage to catch a 29 inch northern, my biggest pike in many years.   Good luck fishing, enjoy the lake, and please pick up your trash.

For sound to return doesn't it need like, well a chamber, hills, valleys. 🤔 The Internet?    Um, sorry there's no hot redheads on this site screaming out in the wilderness for you!!

Anyone on here fishing Niles Point with a couple of kids last weekend?  You might want to let them know that the 'echo' they returned from across the lake has gone viral!    https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEQJ6lmxco0/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet   As of right now, 2.6 million views on Instagram and 1.1 million on TikTok...and climbing.  I feel happy when my posts on this board gets 12 likes! lol

I went one last time yesterday afternoon with a friend for a few hours.  We each got one, and we each missed one.  Raised about 20 birds at four spots, plus one deer.  Unfortunately, the season is now over.   It was a superb season though.  Second best season I've had with this dog.  She just had her 13th season.  I hope she can do it again next year.   I'll be sorting my sock drawer now for a couple months...

He can have this one!  Haha!  We shoulda maybe stayed on top in 14 but we could see the bottom so clearly and it was shallower than we really wanted.  The quick deeper water check yielded perch and pike right away, so we moved.  Caught plenty before dark, now pretty quiet.   I have a hunch the bay WILL fish shallower than the main lake we’re used to.   16 inches of good ice out here.

Thanks for reminding me to make sure that one is in the fish house!  It’s tradition that we watch that on the first trip every year.
