Panning gold????

I know it is not at all a fishing topic, but might be fun to see if anyone has ever tried panning for gold at all. I have heard that there is some to be had, albeit not something that would make a guy rich. Any thoughts?

never panned for it but i caught a gold necklace with a diamond pendent with a lindy rig, found two gold rings, one with a ruby and caught and old crusty pocket watch over the years. still have them all somewhere. i heard the same thing about the gold but i can't remember where exactly the guy was talking about. somewhere around the boomsite, but that can't be the only place if it's true. mabe an urban legend??

No urban legend, there are prospecting clubs in MN . In the late 1800s, early 1900s turn of the century people actually pulled nuggets out of the exposed basalt cracks during low water levels in Taylor's falls! I guess they act as collectors and I'm sure the glaciers have dumped a fair amount of gold over time to be washed down river. There was also some sort of gold rush up on or near the Iron Range. I guess it was hard to mine and until recently. Now with the big machines, processing and chemicles they can grind up the rock and extract the gold. My guess is that the glaciers over all time also ground up gold from the shield rock.

People are actually panning down on the root river and all over for that matter. From what I understand they don't get a whole lot and spend allot of time not getting very much. One of these days I'm gonna make or procure a pan and give it a whirl. Mostly for kicks n giggles. Who knows what else you can find sitting in a river all day swirling dirt in a pan?

My cousin found a ruby unrefined on a beach of lake St.croix while agate hunting. My uncle took it to a gemologist and they cut and polished it for a fee of cousre and offered to buy it for good money! I guess they are pretty common in the area and up north. Pretty neat to think of gems and riches in your own back yard!!!

As part of the Federal Scenic Riverway Act, the St Croix is protected, and gold panning or other mining, or change of topography, is prohibited, as is the removal of any rock or mineral, or plant, or shell, living or dead...except Dead And Down wood for firewood, to be used on site for legal purposes in legal areas...Federal Offences... eek.gif
