Boat Question

Recommended Posts

I found a used boat tat I am looking at. It is a 1986 Lund Pro V Renegade with a (2000)90 horse Mercury Motor, two lowrance depth finders, and a 75 lb thrust Minnkota trolling motor.

He was asking 7500 and i talked him down to 6500. Is this a good deal?

Any help is appreciated as I am new to the boat buying.

THanks

I don't know enough about that boat / motor to know if it's a good price or not. Searching around on-line for similar boats, not just Lund but any similar size / similar age boat with a 90, should give you an idea of if it's in the ballpark or not.

Having the motor be 4 years newer than the boat will add some value. The graphs and trolling motor typically don't add much value unless they are only a year or two or three old.

You could try this in the Boat forum, you might get some better replies there.

hours on that motor are probably impossible to determine. pretty much have to go by trust on that. unless you bring it to a boat service place, they can mabe tell you if it has the hours he tells you. as with cars it is a good idea to have a qualified service person look at it to determine if your on a decent item. 100 bucks saved me several times from major repairs i did'nt have the know how to diagnose on vehicals. spent 100 bucks six times on checkouts and saved about 10,000 bucks in repairs had i bought them. theres a reason people are selling anything. my boat read 70 hours on it when i got it. spent 80 bucks to get it checked and they told me if it had any more than that on it they'd be surprised.it is a 92 i got 5 years ago. in it's 6th year now. power trim went, that's the only problem i've had. just a thought.

Be careful of older boats. Found that out the hard way. I got a used '88 boat and used it for a bit. Then saw something shining on the bottom and found a cruddy patch job over two holes. Took it in to get those fixed and found out the transom was falling off. Got a raw deal. Make sure you really inspect the hull and trust no one. Sounds rude, but that's how it is.

I did get a 2002 Alumacraft 16.5' with 75 hours merc and shorlander trailer. Has electronics, gps and trolling motor for $6500 off of FM. Just bought it late in the year in '06. This has been a great boat for me. I think the price on that old a boat is a little high, but it also has to do with it being spring.

i think the 6500 is a bit high. That boat is old, and the motor really doesnt add that much value to the boat. Im with Sand on this one!

Definitely take your time and be patient with finding a boat. In that price range you should be able to find something newer, and equiped as good or better.

There are a lot of online sites you can find used boats that you can shop & compare. Having a mechanic go through everything will cost you a few bucks, but definitely worth it.

With the tough economy & people upgrading after the boat shows you may find a lot of great deals our there.

Good Luck!

FYI - It's not a fishing boat, but after some negotiating, for $6300 I got a used higher end 1998 22' Cruise/fish pontoon in excellent condition (after some serious cleaning). Equipped with 75hp motor, trolling motor, Lowrance fish finder. Took a few months before I found it on Craigs List, but well worth the patients. At the time similar boats were selling for $9-10,000.
