This ice has to go! Has anyone pulled in any fish off the shore in '08 yet?

Yeah there's been many fish landed so far. There's fish around from fall through spring. It's not just a march/april fishery.

Has this steady wind blown the ice out from along the shore yet or not? I was down there monday the main ice blew out but alot of close shore ice stayed .I did pick up 2 loopers though thank goodness for waders.

I saw five or six guys in front of the French today. It looked like pretty thin ice though.

For you Steelers fans out there. When do you think we might be looking at hitting up the rivers. I actually think that a good wet snow followed by some warm weather might be helpful at this point. Last year was my first year of fishing steelies. WOW! hooked for good now.

The ice was almost all the way across for most of the trip up the shore this morning to Grand Marais. Should be gone by now I am sure. Haven't looked at since 9. But there has to be a couple inches along the whole shoreline. I know Split Rock and every other mouth was froze over. So no Shore Casting.

2nd week of April is usually when things turn on a bit. I am to be able to fish by then or shortly afterward.

I've been inland all weekend and am wondering what the shore is looking like these days. Anyone have a report? Is there any open water or fishable ice? I might head up there tmrw (monday) and was wondering if I should bring the shack or long rods.

I drove up to Two Harbors and back on Saturday, and I would suggest bringing the shack. No fishable open water that I saw. Quite a few guys out icefishing though.

Catfishunter, we need to get out to the Brule when the season opens! I've got the itch! I ran into you a couple times out there this fall, you showed me how your reel worked!? Anyways, i'm way to excited...steethead dreams until then

Did some flyfishing on the shore today, hooked 5 and landed one. There is still a lot of ice along the shore, but there is some open water. Hooking fish wasn't the problem, but landing them with a light leader over 4 ft of pack ice got quite interesting!

Early May, upper north shore. That way I'll have at least a little bit of a chance vs the bait boys. I'm realistic and realize that bait will almost always outproduce flies on the Brule in the spring.

The fat line was the ticket yesterday though!

So will there be enough open water around to bring out the long poles this weekend or are we still going to be using the short ones? Will waders help at all for moving around the shore ice? ?

Sure thing gooty. I see a lot of bad looking ice floating in right now. Doesn't look good.

By the look of everyone's avatars there must be a bug going around or something contageous. I'm building a new whooping stick right now...I thought it would help pass the time but it's making it worse!

I think we should call the CDC; I am probably coming down w/ it in about... 2 or 3 weeks. Should I tell my boss now?

Oh, come on! Mr. Pin needs room to roam. He's made some appearances up the shore, but swirling in a back eddy of a barrier pool isn't super productive and is certainly much less exciting. How bout Catfishhunter and myself give you guys a handicap? blush.gif

How about we just meet up and fish sometime? I like to talk a little smack, but in reality Steelhead fishing is exciting enough without competition.

Well a few of my comrades and I took to the shore on friday and it was a pretty good outing. Four anglers, 6 coho, 2 loopies, 1 31 inch steelie, and 11 lost/broken off fish. I will confess that I went 0 for 5 in my two hours on the Gitch. \:\( Saturday (today) will hopefully be a better percentage day for me. Either way I know where to find a good pile of slabs to salvage the day again and make it home for brunch...and maybe some much needed sleep.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
