Grindstone Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

What do you guys use when you're catching smelt? Does anybody ever catch big pike when they're trying for lakers? I'm planning on heading up Friday and I just want to know what I can to do be prepared. I have some white tube jigs and airplane jigs in glow colors and jigging spoons in silver. Anything else I should get? I'll be trying for lakers.

KG said he talked to a guy and there was 10-11 inches.

Thats not to bad then. If the weather stayed cold there may have been enough ice to drive a truck out, but with the "warm front" and 30's coming our way I don't think we'll make much ice by friday. I think I am going to hold off for a week before going up.

I was planning on it, but unfortunately something came up so I'm going to Lake Cenaiko for rainbows instead. Hopefully I'll be up there soon, though!

people keep talking about red barn, Where is the red barn on the lake?

are there any other access points? (camps, resorts, business, public access)

Just looking for different access points, because can't drive on lake, and don't have sled or wheeler.

thanks.

Im going to guess that people were driving out if there was not a problem with slush. Looking to go on monday.

Maybe room for 1 or 2 to park thats it. No parking on the road there. Heck that road is barely wide enough for 2 cars to pass.

There were truck all over the north end on Friday. I had 14" of ice where I was sitting, I was sure that no one would be driving on the lake but they were all over the north end. I just wish the lakers would have been all over the north end! I ended up finding a good area but didnt have enough time to fish it hard so all I ended up with was a big smelt! The smelt were in there though!

can you use live minnows on grindstone. Never been on it and my son wants to go for his 16th birthday this weekend. Also, any tips on icing trout would help. I am decent on soft water, but never chased them in winter.

I will be there early Saturday staying near and returning with Jari on Sunday. I would not recommend driving on this lake as ice conditions change quickly out there. Since I wont be driving out, I would offer my trout knowledge to anyone with a wheeler or snowmobile who can help us get on the spots. I have landed lakers up to 4 lbs up there and have extra gear. They are hard to locate, but almost ALWAYS bite after located on electronics. Also, there are spots that offer bonus smelt, pike, and streamers on the same tackle.

dkhntr - Grindstone is not a designated trout lake and live minnows are allowed. You do need a trout stamp to possess trout though.

Is there any difference from fishing the south end as opposed to the north end? Just seems like the north end is always the place that gets fished. Just wondering.

Thanks on that. Got the trout stamp from my SE stream this summer. HOPEFULLY I will do good this weekend. Now just have to fire up snowmobile.

JB,

If I'm mobile, I like to start in the south end early and move north midday. I just seem to mark more fish that way on the graph. South end has a deep reef and a point. North-west part has a good point and nice deep contours out from the stream. It's easy to arrive late and launch and fish the north end though!

Thanks for the tip. Yeah, it's tough for me to get up there early in the morning. I guess I'll just see where the empty places are and go from there.

Sleet/rain and winds 20-25 up there Saturday. Looks like a Sunday outing. Roads could be bad!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
