No lakers for ssminner in 68ft of water from 3-530.... back at it tomorrow morning, in three blue fishtraps.... see ya then. swing on thru, hot grill for waterbrats.

How much snow was on top of it all? My buddy said there was almost a foot over most of the lake. Anyone going to be fishing Monday? Thanks for the reports guys.

There is about 8-12 inches of snow on top of it all... it would be a hay-day for a sled, but tough for a 4wheeler without chains... I wish i could stay up for MLK day, but i gots ta workey-work at my J.O.B.............................

I was out there Friday and caught two browns and had a couple of huge rainbows but they woud only gum my bait and never swalowed the hook. I would have probably moved around more but my brand new auger broke... kind of [PoorWordUsage] me off! I cant wait to get up there again. There was a total of 13" with only 6" being clear and the top 7" was white ice. And there was only 4" maybe 6" at the most that I saw. There was some idiot that went full bore out into the middle of the lake with a full size truck, pretty mucha idiot if you ask me!

I used crappie minnows as far as the imits do you think you could look in the regs ike everyone else does so you are responsible for your self. Do you reay want to trust someone you dont even know and then go out and they are wrong and you have more then you are supposed too and then Mr. CO shows up! Trust me just ook in the book, you should have one with you when fishing anyways.

I will OOK in the book. I already have too much stuff with me to carry the regs also. Got to draw the line somewhere. Don't plan on catching my limit anyway.

Yeah, it's a new experimental regulation on grindstone...it's not in the books, so don't look! Trust me, it went into affect this year wink

Well we were out there until 12 and only caught 1 smelt. Alot of people were fishing right off the shore. I am guessing they were fishing for Browns and Rainbows? The wind picked up and we decided to do some snowmobiling instead.

According to the CO, fishing was far better on opening day. Apparently the pressure didn't help fishing after. I can say that the trout seemed hard to find on the electronics, but the two lakers I caught were visible on the graph first. Also got a 3 lb pike and about 8 smelt that were tasty for breakfast. I was pestered by small perch too.

So what's the deal with the shacks right next to shore. Is this where to find the streamers?

I drove out on sunday with a super cab f-150 to the middle of the lake no problems. I wouldn't recommend it, but I would do it again. If I had a wheeler I would have used it. About 3 inches of snow on top. I measured about 8"-9" of clear ice and about 4-5 inches of white ice.

Caught 1 laker about 16" right away and was distracted by smelt and may have missed my window to catch more lakers... Oh well, next time. The CO said that he only saw 1 more laker since opener.

fishing from thursday to sunday, sunday was the most productive by far. the shacks close to shore are fishing for streamers. the lakers were very pickey and took some work. move, move, move, was the ticket.

mwodziak, how deep were you fishing in when you caught the laker? Not looking for your spot just what depth to target them at. I always thought lakers liked it deeper.

Went out on Sat. morning, got two lakers (both keepers)and 5 smelt. We were in about 74 fow and only had 2 bites down low (up to ten ft above bottom). The one hole where I kept a line about 14 ft under the ice is where I caught fish and had a constant bite. em sure it was mostly smelt--but it was nice to get a couple lakers.

Binger, sounds like you had a decent outing. I haven't been out much lately, wanted to try the trout but never made it yet. We'll have to get together sometime and hit the ice before too long. Give me a call some time or I will try you.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
