The time has finally arrived to leave the "standard" fishing and head to URL for some 'eyes and slabs. I can no longer stands the 1-3 fish every 24 hours.

If anyone sees the white garage door wheel house, feel free to stop in for a brew or for some [PoorWordUsage].

The vehicle will either be a Maroon 3/4 ton Supercrew long box Dodge with a topper (about the size of a limo) or a Dark Green Supercrew F-150.

We will be out of Hillmans and that is as much as we have decided.

We have now constructed 2 of our own and 2 other people have "borrowed" our design.

Our first wheel house was out of 3" doors but the rest have been 2". Same for warmth though.

Yeah good times, one of the best ideas we have ever had.

Yeah, finding the doors is the tough part. Cheap anyway....

Our first build was 74" wide and 14' plus a V front and the other is 78" wide and 15' plus a V front.

Wouldn't mind building one a year if I could get the doors....

I like the 15' plus V front the most. Keeps the single wheels outside the frame and allows enough room inside. The best part is the pullout bed mounted in the rear. Plenty of sleepy room

I know of a house built from gagrage door panels and it works pretty slick, the fellow that built also said the same thing,"if you could just find enough old doors".

The doors I got were new. They came from Chicago some had little dents in them. They made use sign a form saying we wouldn't use them for garage doors.

I will be sure to throw in my digital camera for the Feb. 8th trip. For some reason we have no pics of the house itself, only a piece of it occasionally on the "good Fishing" trips to Red.

Speaking of "good weekends" on URL, the past weekend was not one of them. We did manage to take home 2 slot 'eyes (16" and 16 1/2"), a 14 1/2" slab and a jumbo perch. The walleye bite was unusually slow which made finding "slot" 'eyes tough so find. We caught probably a dozen or so that were too big and 5 that were about 8-10". The walleye bite did pick up Early Sunday morning though. From 3-6am I was up probably 10 times. We left at 8 that morning but did not have a bite after 6.

It wasn't a bad weekend, I guess, we are just spoiled from the unbelieveable fishing (crappie and 'eyes) the past 2 years.

The "quake" on Saturday was the highlight of the weekend.

Got a small window to fish up there this weekend, and took it. Was a nice day Saturday, arrived at 10:30am and fished until 9pm. 2 portables, 4 guys. Went out of Agassiz's, stopped and talked to the dude behind the counter there, got a road pass and the info that "Last week they were killing them walleyes at the center bar, seems to have slowed down now" eek.gif Of course. So, we traveled out to the center bar, found a spot amongst the other sheeple, and fished for 2 hours. 1 17 1/8" walleye. Didn't mark or see anything else (flasher & camera) So we made a move. We fished about a mile back toward shore next to the breaker, and no one within 1/2 mile from us. The house I was in, we started catching fish about 4:00, and it went pretty steady until 7:00 when we told the other guys who were fishing further away from the breaker to come over by us and get into some of the fun. Not smart. Auger fired up, fish went bye bye. 5 keepers, all from our house, 9 total. One nice perch. Had to leave Sun morning early, so that was it. Can't wait to get back up in the end of February...

I see we have the same taste in windows. I have 4 actual garage door windows (16 x 12) and in the front peak I put one like you have in your house. It was so [PoorWordUsage] hot when we cooked that we had to open the door, thus, in the sliding window went.

Animalhouse,

I have to skip this weekend cause I am out of the state. Plus, driving the 5 hours every weekend was awful expensive last year. (6 weekends in a row)

I've comprimised with myself that until we find the crappies (and i will find those fricken things) that every other weekend is enough. Though, the closer to March we get the jumpier I get so it will more than likely become every weekend soon. Delaying the inevitable!!!!!

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣
