There is a limited amount of natural reproduction in the lake but it is stocked annually or semi-annually and I think many of these fish make up the daily bag limit for folks. The spawning habitat is limited but I do believe there are native fish out there. Put and take is a matter of another sort. The lake is big enough to sustain a fair amount of pressure and there are some larger eyes in there that may or my not have been stocked fish but I have seen them over 10 lbs. and have filleted some fish with eggs over the years. Whether they would have been fertilized and hatched is another story. You'd have to go to the DNR to find out. It is a fertile body of water and should grow some larger fish but being as it is as large as it is you don't always hear or see the bigger fish that are caught. One exception to this is the Muskies, we routinely see our HUGE muskies caught by the weekender and posed for the local paper. Most of these fish would have had a good future but they made a mistake and got caught by someone. My .o2.

Most of the fish you catch out there are in the 14-18" range so slots aren't really warranted. Most people don't go after the weed walleyes they target the basin fish. I think the slots in place up around Chisago ect are from the 1837 treaty. I also believe there is a rule on the books stating only one over 24" statewide but I may be wrong.

Went out Tonight and no walleyes bit but the crappies were coming through in schools after 8PM. It was beautiful weather to be out on the lake. There was very little traffic on lake three Tonight.

Tomorrow I'll be pulling the shack off the lake. May 10th seems like a long wait for the season to open up again. Maybe more crappies will keep things fun until then.

Got out the last 2 nights, 3 eyes friday and 2 last night with a bonus 10.5 inch perch and some decent crappies up to 12" but most in the 6-9" range. One more night, the crappies seem to be perking up in size a bit. I too will be pulling the shack this evening. Good luck out there!

Went out for one last chance at the pike today. Decided to try where all the fish were getting caught at the Fishapalooza contest.

We had a great day. Spanked the pike from 12pm to 3pm. Got 2 under 3 pounds and 6 more that ranged from 4 lbs to 8.1 lbs. Plus we had a bunch of flags that didn't convert.

Best part was seeing my buddies kid bring in 2 really nice pike. Ear to ear smile. Love it when kids catch big fish.

was on third lake today and caught about 20 walleyes but non over 12 inches and a lot less than 8. Is this the norm on the lake this year?

I pulled my porta-perm off of 2nd lake today - beautiful day out there.

HOWEVER - I also spent about 30 minutes wandering around picking up others trash. This was NOT by the Fishapalooza area, this was by fishing spots on 2nd and a few on 1st. Filled my passenger side footwell with garbage and got chew spit spilled on me and my truck for my efforts.

Here's the kicker - TWO SEPARATE MORONS left trash out there with their mailing address on it! One doofus tried to burn it, the other left it out there with an earing, empty marlboro packs, makeup container and some beer cans.

The nice part - I've got pictures. The DNR will get them tomorrow, and I want to share with the rest of the fishing public who the slobs are.

Anyone know how to post the pics?

Tim

Good job TimR, It really saddens me to see some of the trash people leave out on the lake each year. I usually cary extra garbage bags and pick up stuff as I see it as well. There will be another lakewide cleanup later into march put on by the FL lake association. Last year we had a nice turnout and canvassed all 3 lakes in just a couple hours and collected a large dumpster full of trash. It will be announced in the FL Times and I'll post the date when I find out. Thanks for your efforts, they are appreciated! My last fishing report for the gamefish season: 8 pike 2-5 lbs, 1 walleye 14", dozen crappies 6-11" and a couple perch little tykes. The pike were on a tear yesterday! Had a friend put down a tipup and moved to the next hole to setup and his flag was up. He went to get that and his son hollers he has one in the shack. Got those two in and while unhooking them we had 2 more flags pop. It was like they came through in a wave.

A dumpster of trash ?? mad.gif

Was going to take my new ATV around the lake, but I guess I wouldn't be able to hold it all.....

I want to be a part of that clean-up !! Will be watching or someone post it here possibly?

I was out yesterday and was amazed at the amount of trash that had shown up in just one week. After the Fishapalooza contest last week we scoured a large part of lake one. The Boy Scouts did a great job. Eyestalker and myself went out the next day and had a hard time finding any trash.

Yesterday, while fishing, we filled two trash bags. W T F! I can't believe the amount of trash people have left out there in just one week!

I think a good portion of the trash comes from the punks that are not even out there fishing. Any of you that fish FL a lot probably know what I'm talking about. It's the same kids out there every afternoon and night, racing around and causing problems.

While we are talking trash on the lake, on Saturday on Chisago, I almost tripped over large piles of dog droppings. Can't dog owners bring along a "[PoorWordUsage] scooper" and use it? I don't mind them bringing their dogs to the lake, but please clean it up. mad.gif

Was out yesterday to take the dog for a run around the lake while me and the girlfriend rode the 4 wheeler. I am one to pick up garbage if I see it, but nothing to pick up. I didn't go far thought either.

Loogie,

That was a great end to the (gamefish)ice season yesterday! Matt'll be talkin' about those fish for a long time.

Tun...what time of the day was it when you're tip-ups went berzerk? We were on 1st, and they went crazy in the early afternoon...probably had 15+ tipups... The day before we spent several hours on Big Marine, with nothing at all. Guess that's why they call it fishing...

What about the idiot with the white truck? Not only did he get stuck once but after being pulled out he takes a run at the snow pile again and gets stuck. I don't know if the guy who pulled him out was a friend or not but I would have left him there after the 1st time.

It was fun catching fish while everyone watched him dig out and snap the strap a couple of times.

Eyestalker we were on first from 230 till about 9 last night but our run of activity was from about 4till6 then things fell off with just a few crappies hitting. Great time though.

Fishing tech...

Saw the guy in the white truck (and his buddy) doing about 80 mph on the former radar run track... Was glad to see them leave! But wish they'd have stuck around for another few minutes, as Wash Cty pulled out onto the lake minutes after they left...

tun might be able to speak to the gill/sunny spots on FL. I really don't have any...

Thanks for the kind word Matty but, I have no info on sunfish on Forest. Crappies and walleyes and some of the toothy critters I can help out with but for sunfish I'm as out of touch as anyone.

Hey saw in the paper today that the lake cleanup is going to be March 8th. Free BBQ at the FLaker afterwards for people involved. We had a nice turnout last year and the cleanup only took a couple hours so if anyone has time this is the date right now. 15th is the fallback date if snow conditions or weather prevents but keep an eye on the paper. Hope to see a bunch of you all there.

Was on 2nd tonite and hooked a mess of very nice crappies. Some over 12". I hate being in the "crowd" but have tried numerous other crappie spots on 2nd and 3rd with limited success this year. I do enjoy exploring on the weekends, but when time is tight, I go with the known bite. Thanks for the replies on the sunnies.

I would like to try and help on the cleanup day. Would ATV and trailer be helpful?

How deep were you fishing...?

My guess and it is just a hunch, but I'd bet in the 28-35' range. You can narrow it down from there.

About 30 FOW. Crappies were suspended and varied constantly from 28 to 16. I don't want to make it too easy, but there are only 2 groups of perms in that type of depth on 2nd lake.

Now that it's panfish time I'd really like to get my kids out there on a warm afternoon. Has anyone had any luck with the crappies during the day? I've only been catching them after dark

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
