I am not seeing anything so far in these posts about Reno, so I thought I would ask the question. Has anyone been out on Reno? How is the ice? And of course is there anything going on? I really enjoy this lake and am curious if it is producing.

The ice is fine. We had 16 inches over the xmas weekend. The fishing wasn't all that great. Lots of little perch yet so you need to hit the right times for the walleyes to bite, but you will have to figure that one out on your own.

I am pretty sure I can find them out there. It was the ice I was worried about. I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend. Hahaha.

I'm heading out to Reno this weekend. Any size to the perch people have been catching? Also any word on the walleye situation out there?

Caught a couple decent size perch. Probably 1 in 30 or better are keeps. It's not worth the bait you go through to be catching them. I'd rather pull up my lines and drink and wait for the walleye to come through I guess.

Most of the perch are too small to even fully bite a minnow. You'll get a bunch of tail biters stealing your bait though. Waxies on a small flu-flu were able to land those 4 inch perch all day long though. Never got a keeper in the 100 or so we caught. Had the camera down watching northerns chasing those perch around. They'd swim right past our shiners, and leave a cloud of silt and they jetted off chasing perch. Walleyes wouldn't hit until after dark for us. We saw them swimming around all day long, but just browsing.

Tried the chubby darters, tried most everything in the box. We saw some walleyes last weekend on Minnewaska that were ignoring our shiners and eating the tails of minnows that we cut off (we had been jigging just the minnow head). The minnow tails had sunk to bottom and a few walleyes were scavenging dead food instead of fresh lively minnows. So we dropped down some pieces of minnows on plane hooks layed them on the bottom, but no takers. Learned quite a bit just watching them though.

I have a cabin on Reno but have never ice fished it, i heard of some people getting into the crappies out there on the hard water but not much of anything else.. I was just wondering if any of you have done good with the eyes at all, i usually only get a few in the summer, but still not like it used to be...

Have been trying it out there for a couple weeks lookin for some nice perch. Last year was much better, I think the heavier pressure has really downsized the perch and crappie. Walleye success has been very poor. This is a shame. This used to be a pretty good lake, but I think it will take a few years to recover.

I think I'm movin to waska

Good Fishin'

Unfortunately, Reno is already into it's third year of "recovery". The lake is changing for whatever reason. Weeds are growing in much more than previous years, perch population has exploded, and sunfish are very prevolent - where as previously you couldn't find a sunfish after searching all day. Also as much as it pains me, the bass fishing has vastly improved. This lake is turning into Minnewaska minus the Minnewaska Lake Association to restock it. The DNR test nets still show a fairly high count of walleye for the area, but the counts are way down from 4 years ago. My guess is that the high counts of perch and sunfish are picking off much of the walleye fry each year. The lake may never recover to the premier walleye fishery it once was the way things are going now.

The heavy perch population can't hurt the walleye population much. It may just be in a cycle like it was 10-12 years ago where there's so much for the walleyes to eat they don't need to bite on our fishing tackle. In that case they eventually ate it down & were still hungry, hence the fishing was really good for a couple of years or so.

The sunfish and crappies have seen an increase on reno the past couple years. Although many are too small to keep as of this past weekend. The perch are really small with none kept out of 100 caught sunday. My buddies were also out Sunday and managed to bag two nice walleyes in 20 feet. One was 24 inches.

One other thought,

With the power of the technology we have today, fishing is much easier. The power of these boards is a powerful tool also. If you look at the views on some of the threads, I wonder when a guy posts that he's nailin' big crappie on lake X, how fast does this lake get pressured into oblivion?

I know, theres still cell phones and all, and one guy only tells his best friend, but this site has power and I think some posters should use restraint in being so specific.

What do you guys think?

Yep, I agree with using restraint in specifics. This has improved dramatically over the yrs though.

Yes,I think your right fisherking32, and I also wonder why some people think just because there is a few fish being caught it gives them the right to thow out there respect for others,by coming to a lake where they probably have never fished before catch as many fish as they can, tell everyone they know,in some instances even trespass across somebodys property to get on to the lake, only to leave and go to the next hot lake and do it all over again!! sorry but the lack of respect some people show makes me sick!!

I live on the lake and personally think the changes are due to the lake itself changing. The DNR has stated this in the report they put out with the 2006 survey. Anyone who has put down a camera in the lake will tell you the perch are everywhere which means to food for the fish is everywhere. This I feel has the biggest impact on fishing. The walleye fishing this winter has been better than the 2 previous years in my opinion but it is far from fast and furious.

Opener and the week after were good.  Not the numbers we normally get but better quality in the East End.  Not surprised on the weights for the Auto City a.  Usually for us we only catch a few slot fish but we averaged 3 a day for 10 days.  2 overs, biggest 27 inches.     Our best luck was 12-16 feet for quality.  When we went deeper we caught more but smaller.  Bass were really starting to heat up.  For me little earlier than normal.  Found some nice Bluegills the day we went after some panfish.  Dock fishing was as many as we wanted per usual.

We will be up on June 8th for the week. It will be our 13th year in a row staying on the lake.  I hope the walleye are hitting the bobbers by the time that we get there.

Those are some fine specimens. Great job

I'm quite shocked to hear that a walleye tournament is still doing a live weigh in.  Virtually every event these days around here is doing a catch, photo, and release format.   Regardless, nice work.  Congrats.

On the south end...   A great week of fishing with walleyes and saugers caught in good numbers.   The go-to presentation, again, was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 17 - 21' of water.  Various schools of walleyes and saugers across the south shore.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well again.   Some big pike and jumbo perch being caught by walleye anglers. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers normally head to the lake.  12 - 15' of water is holding some nice fish.   Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River is closed until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes being caught along with a mixed bag.  12 - 25 feet of water.  Points, neck down areas and bays with warming water were holding good fish this week.    The go-to presentation was a jig and minnow as on the south shore.  A mixed bag as is common around the Angle.

Nice work!   Here's two words you hardly ever hear anyone say anymore.  "grateful and humbled"

RLG, thanks for the shout-out!     Jeff and I are still trying to wrap our heads around what happened this past weekend.  We are humbled and full of gratitude  for having won 'The Classic' for a second time.     We practiced through all the rain on Thurs and the wind on Friday and found six different spots holding big fish.  Fishing was good on both days with several 'overs' in our catch...but would it hold up for another day?   We didn't know.     On tourney day, we made a long run to our first spot where I lucked out on a 26.5"er on my second cast.  Jeff followed up with a thick 27" er a few minutes later, which turned out to be the big fish for the event at 7.26lbs.  We finished out our limit and weighed-in at 10:30 am for the welfare of the fish in our livewell.    There were some big weights in this event which would have won in most other years, but - for whatever reason - this was our day.  Everything just went our way.  Again, we are just super grateful and humbled by this success.  We also want to congratulate all the other anglers who did well and give a big 'thank you' to the tournament organizers who put on such a great event!

I had a good start to the season on opener. Fishing was slow but consistent. I had four eaters in the box by lunch dragging perch raps. Crappies were biting. I haven't been up since so don't know how things have changed since then, but I'm sure the walleye continue to migrate out into the main basins.

Let’s start this by congratulating Brianf and son for winning their second City Autoglass Walleye Classic last weekend. These guys know how to fish.  We just got to the lake for the season. Chores are almost done and I’m ready to fish.  red(new dog is more yellow)labguy

I tried starting a 2024 Lake Vermilion Fishing Report topic but it doesn't show up on this board.   Maybe somebody else knows how to do it?
