Jim, My roomate and I will be out there at about 300 and we'll have a power auger we could help you out with, just make sure to pick up some small orange and glow jigs and have your lines in the water at 5 b/c thats when the party starts. Small crappie minnows are working well too. We'll have the black Frabill XL, stop by and say hi.

Vermonter 1st off welcome to FM.

I think spudding a hole will surely make you more enemy's than friends. Spudding through 12" of ice or more will make tons of noise and take a long time. Especially around that many people by the d a m. Surely isnt good for shallow crappie fishing because you will spook them.

You could get lucky and find some of todays holes and open them with your spud though. I suggest you buy a hand auger. A Lazer if you can afford it but a good sharp Mora will do.

There will be many many people by the d a m if its anything like its been.

Have a good time and catch what you can eat. These Crappies have been getting pounded very hard lately. Some feel the need to keep a limit every time out wich doesnt help the lake in the long run.

Well said steve if every one keeps there limit wright. Wrong if you do not eat them let them go so they grow so we can eat bigger ones. Some day we will see what we did to a lake by taking and not putting back and I see it on fish this year. Take what you will eat and let the rest go, and take another day. Have fun out there.

I totally agree with you guys, if you're not going to eat them, throw 'em back. In the past couple weeks they've been pounded, it seems like the pressure has been let up some due to people not catching as many but it's still had a lot of fishing done in that one spot.

Vermonter,

I will be up to Fish lake for the afternoon bite. I'll be starting out on Rice lake this morning with my brother to do some tip up fishing. If you see this post this morning before I head out and would like to e-mail me at the address below I'll give you my cell number and I'll hook you up with a hand auger to use for a while.

Welcome to the site it's a great place to hang out.

Well it's two hours after my last post so I'm guessing this was not seen in time. I'm heading out for the day. BD110 is clearly marked on the back window of my truck. (Red Ford) If you see me heading out to the lake stop by and say hi.

Jim, it was nice to meet you out on the lake. How'd that flag turn out for you? It was a lot slower than it has been in the past, we had 2 fish, with no other bites. Still it's just as exciting watching that bobber go down just like when I was little.

That flag was just a small snake pike. That flag was all I got the whole time. I ended up leaving around 6:30ish because it was so slow. I was going to ask how you did but apparently it was slow for you too. Yea, it was nice meeting you too.

Hopefully I will get out there again soon.

Travel is getting better with cooler temps. Slush is starting to lock up in spots. After this weekend it should be solid on top as long as no new pressure ridges open and spill more water on top. Dress warm and have plenty of heat this weekend boys. Highs barely in the positives are forecasted.

Good weather to test out my new house.

I picked up a new Ice Camo House by Otter. You cant even see me on the ice its so Camo. grin.gif

Very nice house. The new canvas is much tighter and has a black lining so it really cuts down the wind and heats up very well. Im also impressed with the new flex windows. They are more plyable and shouldnt ever crack in the cold.

If you ever do find me on the ice stop by and Ill show ya the new ice boat.

I was out from the dam all evening and only marked a few. Had one nice crappie shake loose at the top of the hole and that was that.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
