Mark and I were out on the lake , 1 fish in many hours was really dead. The only one fish was a bass 14". The ice was 14" thick when i put the ice dipper down the hole to measure it. People were driving around all over the place.

Did the marginal bite finally peter out or is it because the access is drifted in. There has been one lonely portable out there the past week. Seems to be slowly sinking into the snow

perch just out into the lake from the channel. nothing worth getting crazy about. have to be their very early though as the bite slows to a near stop once its light out.

not really worth the effort right now

What's the word on someone falling in down there? Sounds like he's alright and everything. Heard about it over the weekend.

try the south central forum. walleye fishing is better on albert lea than fountain right now. its a safe bet for fish, but cant guarantee the walleyes. i do very well avoiding the masses. fish the dam and you will catch something, but there will also be 1000 other people there that have never released a fish in their lives. i dont fish the dam anymore because the lack of releasing fish makes my blood boil a bit.

I know what you mean about fishing the dam... Me and my borther hit that spot often, and at least twice a week I will see this on specific guy there who will fish his limit of eyes and they just leave with him. I wish the DNR would check this douche bag because unless he is eating walleye for every meal, there is no way he needs that many fish. I will only keep one which we will fillet up that night and eat.

Hey you don't happen to have a brother named Erick do you?? And yea the same thing goes down here in Austin at the eastside and Riverside dams. I always see "them" keeping every dam fish they catch whether its a 3 inch gill or a chub. Its just disgusting. I got a nice walleye thru the ice on Albert lea lake but haven't been over for open water yet.

Call TIP if you see people taking over limits or breaking the law, at times there is only one CO covering 1 to 2 county's and fallowing up on tips as well as patrolling, unfortunately they don't have the numbers to be all over.

Has anyone been fishing this lake lately. Always seems to be people fishing from shore near the outlet bridge but never more than a couple boats on the lake. Thinking of giving it a try if it ever quits raining!

It's full of walleyes that need to be thinned out. The winter carp netters caught more walleyes than carp! Walleyes in DNR survey nets were really high too.

Wouldn't hurt to take the boat out for a few laps around the shoreline and a line in the water.

Yeah the lake is full of nice eyes, you just have to locate them.Just hit the bridge and some of those points out there and you should find some(10"-26").Also move along the shoreline.

Was out there yesterday with no rain finally and did ok but they were 12"-13"ers so they went back.nothing by the bridge for us just in 6-6.5' of water caught 10 in about 1 hour until the crowd moved in which was fine then it slowed down big time.but what a nice day to be out there.has anyone been hitting the bridge by the pits lately hows that, alot of people on shore by the dam though must be hitting there also with all the rain.Good luck!

I've looked at maps of this lake and it looks real shallow, does it get real weedy? Also how is the public access?

Link to comment

not weedy at all. mostly sludge. the public accesses are fine there with plenty of parking space. its shallow so find the holes/moving water and find the fish

What's with those guys wading out there off the bridge with the float-suits on? They really tear up the water where everyone's fishing.

Here was a short blurb from last Friday:

Walleye are biting on Albert Lea Lake

by Dick Herfindahl

Albert Lea Tribune

It’s not a very well kept secret anymore! The walleye bite on Albert Lea Lake has been good as of late and judging by the number of boats and people fishing there are plenty of fish being caught. You can look out on the lake almost any time of day or night and see boats; this is the sign that fishing is good. I know of a few fishermen that have caught their limit of nice walleye and I did hear of one person that caught a 30-incher, which I hope, was released. A fish that size should be considered either a “wall hanger” or an egg factory because it won’t be very good eating.

That’s only my opinion and as long as it’s a legal fish it’s yours to do with as you wish. That’s why I usually have a camera handy when fishing because you just never know when you might catch that “lunker.” I always get a good feeling whenever I catch a big fish and snap a couple of pictures and release it to fight again another day.

The sunfish have been biting on Fountain Lake and there are some decent ones being caught. One thing about having a few nice days it brings out the fishermen and the fish seem to be cooperating. I dined on some walleye and sunfish the other night and mmm-mmm-mmm it was mighty tasty!

great, another 1000 people out at the dam not releasing a single fish probably.

what bridge are the people with the float suits at? just asking as i havent been home in awhile

Its the 19 bridge, all that does is scare the walleyes out of that tight area, it is wise to stay out of the water, trolled the whole lake the other morning 1 small walleye things have slowed down. not as much current, i havent found any deep holes out there used to be a ltle deeper out by the interstate bridge but i think that kind of filled in with sediment also, New york pt isnt really an under water pt theirs not much of a depth change just maybe mud to sand transition , other then that they roam all over in that dish pan. limits have been taken during the high water i hope they know its only one over 20" and please take the time to pick up garbage when you see it . thanks and good fishin!

I Know it's long shot:

On Sunday 6/22 between Ny point and the I-35 bridge on the south side my son lost his pole in the water. Someone might snag it, If you find it let me know.

Thanks

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
