i was going to say, looks like your to deep or the water is so dirty that you cant see a thing. I hate going to lakes like this. Reason i say that, is becuase you really have to consentrate, where if your on a clear lake, its alot better feing that you can see everything in the hole.

By the time I got set up it was 8AM and I only had the kitchen pass till noon or so; so I started tearing down at 11:30AM. I saw 2 fish. One didn't make it to the hole and spooked when I moved the decoy (I didn't see it until I moved the decoy) and the second was all over my live decoy.

nice photos merkman, I put down the spear and went up nord to catch some pannies this weekend did well but all I could think about was jabbin pike.

the lake I typicaly spear is very dirty but better than the past few years sucker decoy disapears after three feet down in 7ft of water. the decoy you can see on the bottom of the lake but cant see bottom at all. it suckz but I still have managed to see 3 or 4 fish a day.

Things are lining up for Rainy Lake this next weekend.

All day Saturday and half a day Sunday.

Maybe I will finally get to see a big gator in the spear hole!!!

those are fish that me and my buddy got yesterday and today, it was his first time spearing and he got a nice 32.5 inch 9 pound fish now he's hooked. thanks for posting those pics b&s

Tengauge, Nice fish. I noticed the spear in one of your pictures. Can you tell me what you know about it and where you got it? The reason I ask is that it looks like a type of spear that was made in Michigan a while back. They are now hard to find.

i have no idea where that thing came from that's not my usual spear but a back up in case a fish is hit poorly i can get them again, i think one of my dads friends made it but i'm not sure. first time i had to throw it the other day and i got that 9 pounder on the bottom after my buddy hit it in 12 feet of water so it flies pretty well. good luck in the last week boys, i'm pretty pumped but this weekend it's off to leech for the festivities.

It looks to me like it is a "tweterbuilt" ( blacksmith by the name of Dick Tweeter. Dead and gone now, but he built hundreds of spears. The curve on the tines at the top are distinctive of a spear built out of a fork. Many built out of worn pitch forks, hay forks, and silage forks. Spring steel, very hard, agressive barbs welded on. His later spears mostly don't have the distinctive curve near the spine of the tines. Any chance of a better picture of that spear?? Brent

Yes that is a pretty interesting spear for a backup! The spear I was thinking of was made by a blacksmith in MI who used sugar beet rakes with forged barbs added on, much like the "tweterbuilt" spear referenced by fisherking. It is fun to learn stuff like that about old spears that are still around and being used.

A few pics from today.

All in all, it was a good morning. Best day of the year action wise. Had 8-9 fish come in today, all but one came after the jointed decoy. That has been my best one this year, and I only used it two times. Speared two, screwed up a chance at a third, oh well, next year.

It's only been closed one day, and already looking forward to next season. I am going to build a new permanent house. Then use the portable every once in while to head up north.

ya im looking foward to next year as well. I have learned a little bit about these lakes around me that i have here, but ill take the boat out and see more for next year, so i can learn more about them. I can wait for next year.

Bass n spear, We'll have to hook up next year as I have been fishing these lakes for sometime now. It would be nice to compare notes as I'm sure we've been on the same water and not even known it.

I get out musky, northern and bass fishing quite a bit during open water. Maybe we can hook up. Anyone else interested let me know.

Ended my season on Saturday. Almost didn't make it as one daughter was sick and the other had play practice with mom. Hit a local lake and had to wait till 5:17 before the first one decoyed. Five minutes later another decoyed. Two good eaters and my season ended. Good way to go out.

We can get together and go out on my boat forsure, i have no problem with that at all. Im sure your right, that we were out on the same lakes, and didnt even know it. But ya, we will have to hook up together and see what we can figure out together.

I like the great pictures showing fish in the spearing hole.

But, I also noticed a lot of people don't "square off" the hole or open it up 100%.

Man, if I didn't clean the hole up entirely (even under the house), my dad would not allow me to use the house. That rule sticks with me today....

Do any of you spear under the ice? I think it would be hard with uneven ice.

I am not trying to criticize, don't get me wrong. Just curious....
