I do feel your pain. It seems every year I get checked we get a ticket for something. One year it was not having a throwable flotation for any boat over 16'. Another year it was that my plug in my gun was legal for 3" shells but it would allow another 2 3/4". It was a plug that I had bought from the store so I guess I didn't question it. I was wrong. What it all seems to boil down to these days is you just about need to be a lawyer or retain one to bring with in the field. I will be honest I have knowingly broke laws in the past but I don't do it with out good reason. I have tresspassed to retrieve fallen game, even after the owner told me to leave. I just felt that even if I got a ticket I should still retrieve what I shot.

It is getting harder and harder to follow all the regs. I do my best to keep up on them but sometimes its almost overwhelming. I wonder if they have ever considered some kind of standardization in the laws from state to state. I understand that limits are still going to be decided on the local level but as far as licensing, tresspass, ammo, guns etc. basically the general regulations. It would certianly make it easier to hunt in other states.

It is our fault, but you have to admit that they are hard to keep up on.

Good points.

Another check point on Sunday on Hwy 11, everything went fine for us as we know how ND follows the laws to the tee. We actually have ran into the warden that checked us the day prior when we were fishing. Just make sure you follow the regulations and know what you have for game and fish in your coolers.

It does feel like they interrogate you trying to trip you up on shooting more birds then allowed on a particular day. So if you come home with 2 days of birds make sure of your story..... Of course the truth that you shot 1/2 each day.

I am back....it took a little longer than I thought but I got the home computer working again. I dont have much to offer....just follow the rules and you should be fine. I would agree that sometimes things can get difficult to follow....I have gone over the regs book several times and some of the rules are....well...I just dont know if I understand them or not. I guess it would be up to me to figure them out before going off on a hunting trip.

Hitman:

My wife and I built a new home in South Moorhead.....it was a long 3.5 months but its all done. Sorry it took so long to get back to you....I was at Camp Ripley this past weekend for the 2nd weekend of the open archery hunt. Loads of fun but didnt get one.

Take care

Cliffy.

Did you see much? Did anyone get anything nice? I have thought about doing that myself, just never done it. Kinda like Elk hunting, bear hunting Lope hunting ... You know how it is.

Congrats on the NEW house! That is awesome. Should have built it in Hawley-wood -- wink.gif

Building a new house is VERY stressful. A buddy of mine said he was thinking about building a new house but he decided to buy one instead. When I asked him why he didn't build one he said, "My dad told me that my marriage wasn't strong enough."

Harsh words but true ...

It was my first year hunting at Camp Ripley and I will take it as a learning experince. I enjoyed it but there is a large crowd of people. I had four people walk right under my stand the first day....but they moved out of the area as soon as I said hello. I found a better spot the 2nd day and didnt see anyone else in the area. We saw some deer but nothing within bow range. I will take what I learn from this year and try to get into Ripley again next year.

We saw a few really nice deer at the weight station....150 class. One of the DNR guys said someone brought in a 255lber on Saturday afternoon...but I didnt get a chance to see that one.

The new house is great....building was alright.....I just wanted a over-sized heated garage....once I got that...I didnt really care what my wife did with the rest of the house. To be honest, I had little, if anything, to say or do about the rest...and she did a great job. I would have liked to have built in Hawely...but my job sorta requires that I live in Moorhead.

Take care.

Cliffy.

Dead --

Where have you been? You seem to have been AWOL this summer. Well with ice fishing just around the bend, we will need your daily updates on how the freeze is progressing.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
