What action and power for walleye jigging?

Yesterday I bought a 6'8" medium extra fast St. Croix Avid. I've had one friend say take it back and get a ML fast and another friend that says get a M fast because they use different guides and are more sensitive. I want one mostly for jigging walleyes anywhere from 8'-25'. I have been using a Guide Series 6'6" ML fast and can't complain it's just that I listen to my buddies and they say I'll catch more if I used a more sensitive rod. The one thing I like about the avid St. Croix is it comes with a lifetime warranty. Thanks in advance.

I think there is plenty of sensitivity with a Medium Fast for jigging. I use my 6'6" M,F for jigging, casting, and even occasional trolling. I have a ML Triumph series that is better suited for casting light lures and far less suited for trolling, it works well for jigging as well. If I had to choose one, I'd go for medium.

Although I use Gloomis rods, it sounds to me like you made a good choice. For jigging I like med/fast action rods. My main jigging rod is a 6' and my backup is a 6/6 med-light/fast action. The Avid will be a great jigging rod. You may want to try a little deeper water though as surface temps start to drop. Good luck.

I have mediums and medium-lights for walleye fishing and prefer to use the MLs first, depending on what I'm doing and how much lead I'm using. Both are good, it's really what you prefer and what feels best to you.

btw the Avid is a great stick.

I'll second PerchJerker's response and say that much depends on where you're jigging, and how much weight you're using.

Deep water in good current on the river, and I'll use up to 1oz jigs. For 1/2oz and up I like a Medium Fast in a 6' or 6'3". I prefer the shorter rod for better control. For lighter applications (most of the year), I'll use a MLF action first. I've been using the Limit Creek 6'6" MLF on the river this year, and have been impressed. It's a very all-purpose rod that I use for jigging, rigging, and pitching.
