Baiting

I started out with 3 baits, went to one, now I am back to three again. I put the last of the three after work today on public land. I find a spot, make my crib and what not and am heading back out. On my way out I look to my left and I see a 5 gallon bucket. I look in it and there is some pastry crap in it. I look about 15 yards over and there is a pile of bait sitting there in the wide open. No crib, no logs over it, no sign displaying the correct info, no nothing. Then I think maybe he is hunting right now. There are only a few trees in this swamp that a guy could get in and there was no ground blind. I did not see these things on the way in or I would never put a station there. My bait site is maybe 40-50 yards away from this junk. I know the rule says 100 yards. But he has no sign up. No nothing, just a bait pile with a 5 gallon bucket laying in the swamp. What should I do?

This bear season has been a disaster. No more hunting public land for me. Deer, bear, or anything. The one station I have a private land the homeowner rides his 4 wheeler up to my bait and checks it out mad.gif. Then I find out he has been shooting trap on a regular bases close to my station mad.gif. I know it is his place and he can do what he wants. One way to solve these problems is to get my own acreage I guess. Maybe that is what I will have to do. Maybe tomorrow morning I will go for a hike in the swamp and do a bacon burn tongue.gif. Maybe next year I will apply for the BWCA bear area and just do bacon burns and get away from people.

Well Biff sorry to hear about your troubles. I am hunting on public land as well and maybe i just got lucky not having any problems. I do know of two other hunters in the area but we all keep out space from each other. Now on the other hand Biff you could have a guide in the area that is doing this. Nothing against guides but i have heard of guides baiting near other baits, and even going as far as pouring gas on other peoples bait to keep the bears hitting their baits. If there is an outfitter near you i suggest getting way back in there if possible and do not mark your trail to the bait so no one else can find it.

Sorry to hear some of you are having a tough year, I am still getting hit. Last night I hunted from the ground like I post before, an again no show. So today after work, I access the trail he is coming on to the site an have a very general direction he is coming from before gettin on the trail to the site. So I decided to set up a new site. I should pull the bait trick but I'm quickley exhausting my financial resources. I set up a pop up blind about 40 yards from a new site an camode it with brush really good. Then I whent around to the old site an did a grease drag, droping greasy fruit loops along the way, I hung the grease sack an put some bait uder some heavy logs I was able to find, tomorrow I'm gonna do another grease drag the same way an add some bait just a teaser to try an get him hungry to hunt sunday. Hopefully he'll feel more comfortable to come into the new site if he's hungry enough. We'll see, boar

I am trying your bacon burn right now. I tried one before and I put the holes near the top of the coffee can and it never got warm enough to cook the bacon. I let it burn for about half an hour.

The second one I moved the holes closer to the bottom and I am getting that bacon smell. My question is how many pieces of bacon do you use? I have 2 in ther enow. Use more or less? I will also experiment with things to burn.

Yea ya have to experiment a little with candles or like you did move the holes closer. I put in several. One thing I like to use to is maple flavor sausage. Is that bacon spray the one we get in the green an white bottle? Try heating that stuff up, Thats highly concentrated stuff an should really put out the scent. Pluse you might be able to use it again an again.I've heated the carmel scent an wowwee!! I like to put my bottle of scent on the dash of my car, by the time I'm going hunting it's already nice an warm, an heat up quicker an smells more potent than in a chilled state. Good luck boar

No prob. I just got back from my new site, I did a second scent drag from the old again an on the way I found out he had been on the previous drag. Sure enough he easily found the new site. I think I'll bait the new site for a nother day or two an hunt it on Mon. or Tues> Boar

hey guys i am getting better hits this past week then before opener, but i think i am having two different bears hitting my baits. The first two pics are what i believe to be the same bear and the second two is what i believe to be a real shooter if he would come in during shooting hours. And of course the day that the bears came in i was more focused on deer opener that i decided not to hunt bear. go figure.

Hard to tell if the bears are different. The first pic looks like a female with the big ears. The last couple of pics do look bigger and have ears farther apart.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end... The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free. Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well. Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike. Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River. Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently. Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn. Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options. Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River... Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing. Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues. A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River. Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise. Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale. The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st. Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing. One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker. Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle... A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water. In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener. Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years. Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads. Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water. Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad. Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
