90,000 + Hooking Mortality

Mother nature will fix any baitfish shortages if there is one just as it did in 02'. No reason too open up a harvest on the prime spawning females.

When we were fishing the Red Door Tourney last weekend it looked like a walleye cemetery out there. Fish floating everywhere we went. We saw what had to be a 45'' plus muskie floating on one of the flats. It is sad to see but that's a side affect of fishing. If people are handling fish for 2 minutes or 30 seconds, I don't think it much matters. We aren't critizing anglers in May when guys are waiting for Everyone and God to take a picture of their 24''. It all depends on the fish and in that hot water right now, to each their own as far as which will make it back to the bottom and which will not.

I hope the DNR dumps 1million perch fry back into the lake again. I say that because one year you couldn't find a perch in that lake and the next year there is this incredible population of perch. Suspicious to me. If they do, Hopefully it will get the 50 26'' to 27'' walleyes we've caught this year to 28''.

I would agree with most to leave the lake alone until October or so. Go pick on Winne or Leech. Go fish Minnetonka, at least the eye candy is nice, if you know what I'm saying wink.gif.

This is a prime example of the 40% DNR estimated Mortality from Tournaments on Mille Lacs... that no one wants to believe! blush.gifshocked.giffrown.gif

So Walleye 71 you are saying that someone who comes up once a year should leave the lake alone because your tournament killed a lot of fish? mad.gif You caught your 50+ good fish and no one else should fish it! confused.gif What maybe it should be a tourney fish kill only? confused.gif Yeah that's it, owners and tournament fishing only for the lake. crazy.gif SORRY BUT I DON’T AGREE!!

I very much disagree with that statement. I believe proper and quick release methods make a big difference when the water is warm. When it is cool, it doesn't matter nearly as much.

Also, to my knowledge, perch fry have NEVER been released in Mille Lacs. Correct me if I'm wrong on that. Booms tend to follow busts in these situations because an absence of tiny baitfish (young perch) means a boom in the types of things they eat. When baby perch food is plentiful, that sets the stage for a perch boom the following year... just as we saw after the '01 down year. By the end of summer '02, the lake was full of little perch. The bite was better than this year up until August of 02' when those perch got to the size where walleyes could eat them.

To dump a million perch fry the DNR would have to have a hatchery that hatched them out. Do they even do that?

If you're in a situation where you're likely to release fish often then go barbless. I fish from a boat as well as fly fish and often when going after trout I have to use barbless hooks. After awhile you get use to going barbless so for fly fishing I've gone totaly barbless which makes it very easy to release a fish and hopefully improves survival rates. I've recently started using some barbless hooks while regular fishing. Since I don't keep bass I've crimped the barbs down on my bass lures which makes it simple to release. If I were fishing Mille Lacs and that narrow slot I would consider pinching the barbs on some of my hooks.

is it me or are there actually some people out here thinking of ways to improve the lake? I do believe so and I hope the DNR is reading and may consider some of these ideas. But then some of the great experienced fishermen will complain about having to change. They are perfect fisherman and do no harm to the lake ever.

Keep up with the brain storming and maybe the DNR will join in and have some more tools to use other than slot limits.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
