Smallie Opener

5 posts in this topic

Well the real opener has come and gone now. I hope the fishing was too good since I don't see any reports. Did anyone make it out this weekend? I was unable to, but I do plan on getting out Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I'll post a few reports when I get back.

I flailed aimlessly in a high and muddy river for a few minutes this past Saturday, just so I could say I went out for the bass opener. I'm anxiously waiting for some warmer days, and warmer, clearer water for some good smallie fishing.

I have to agree with WxGuy. I made a couple of random casts in a new stretch of water, but it was really too muddy and fast to really expect any action. I'll be looking to get out more once the local high school season is finished. Good Luck to All.

[Edited by Admin - Please read forum policy. - No dead fish pictures]

fishing was good, in all we caught and released well over 30 smallies in 1/2 a day of fishing with the boys. Kameron kept this one and a few others for eatin. This one was the largest at a bit over 4 pounds.

Fishing wasn't fantastic today. I only caught about 15, but it sure felt nice to be out there. I counted 10 beds and there was still a male guarding one of them. The majority of fish were still shallow. That surprised me, I thought they would be deeper. Caught a 12, 2 14's, and a 16 incher.

This is the 16 incher. Not the best photo, but I was by myslef and wanted to get it back in the water quickly.

Did you finish 7th grade grammar? I'm trying to understand your question...can't!

There are two main spawning spots on Vermilion that I know of. I'm near the one on the west end of Vermilion. The walleye haven't been as good on this end yet they don't pull any fish out from here. They've been pulling walleye out of the east end spawning spot in Pike Bay, and for some reason walleye have been doing better over there.   I have no doubt that there are many variables that go into the equation, but you can't ignore that the end they put the 10% back into has been doing better than the one where they leave it alone.

Are there any updates for the area?  It sounds like crappie fishing is good in the shallows on Fishtrap.  I heard Sham is fighting high waters with no end in sight....

Trolloni - Do you write it that way to actually troll us?  Creel/lake surveys show Vermilion is very healthy and the DNR continues to use new technology.  It's only going to get better.  If we listened to old, arm-chair QB's, fishing would be as shi#TY as the West side.

At least10% of all eggs hatched at the Pike River Hatchery are returned to Vermilion waters every year. According to DNR statistics that percentage is usually a much higher survival rate then if they had let the walleyes spawn naturally! I consider that a good trade off! Cliff
