Did not get drawn for area 51. A little weird since every year I look there is always left overs. Oh well, have to go no quota. smirk.gif

Shoot! It was going to be my first year bear hunting, too. Darn it.

I got mine for area 24. My girl friend didn't get drawn for area 26. Hopefully we can get her a surplus area 24 permit.

Got mine, ya that seems alittle weird that 51 didn't have surplus usually they have a couple hundred leftover, well I received mine for 51 so I will be good to go!!

Maybe gas prices has something to do with area 51 not having any surplus this year. Oh well, have to hunt no quota east of town.

I agree that seems weird. I got drawn this year but I am surprised that there was more then 3000 applicants. There are already too many people hunting in the area I hunt.

I got mine in Zone 31 but my buddy has not received one in the mail yet- I got mine on Sat. How can he find out if he was not drawn?

Well now that sucks, i missed the application this year and with my wife over seas we just figured we would buy the surplus tags for 51. I am not going to enjoy telling her that now she will have to wait until next year to get a chance at a bear.

Just a question about the color phases- In MN do some bears change from cinamon to black or do they stay cinamon all their lives- is this even possible- I ask because my guide said that he has a 400# cinamon in the area and just wanted to know if he stays that color all year or he is that color now and will be black come september. Thanks

We hunt up near Tofte and usually maintain 10-12 active baits. I know its the beginning of June but im excited and have been preparing for some time. What does everyone have for bait??

Here is my list so far with a lot more on the way.

2 Chest freezers with dough nuts.

1 Chest freezer with frozen meats scraps.

50 lbs of beaver meat

500 lbs of bread

25 Gallons of liquid molasses

5 Gallons of liquid smoke

We will also have two 55 gallon drums of apples, one full of sweet corn, and another with oats and corn.

If anyone has some interesting "secret" mixes or bait recipes email me as I have some very good bait recipes that I wouldnt mind sharing.

I heard Molases is not good for bait. The bear eat it and get a stomache ache (they love the taste though) and they will not eat for a couple days?

Has anyone else heard this?

I also heard that about Molasses. A guy told me just to use a touch of it and not a bunch. I have never used it myself. My bait consist of:

55 Gallon drum of Trail Mix (400lbs)

160 lbs of licorice

160 lbs of gummy bears

100 lbs chocolate

80 lbs berry patch bear bait

150 lbs donuts

Will also be adding these items right before season:

Dog Food

Apples

Scent Balls

Liquid spray scent

Grease

I also want to hang a beaver carcass from a tree by the bait. I heard that they can't resist beaver. True? Is it legal to hang a carcass from a tree?

As far as secret mixes I have none. I have a found out through trial and error that a wide variety of bait is better. Bears are like humans and different bears like different things. More variety of bait you have the better chances multiple bears will visit your site. grin.gif This year my cousin and I are going no quota by Milaca. Anyone else? I will have the time to bait this year so how much should I put out the first time? You see my list so I was thinking a ice cream bucket of each. To much? I will only have one station and my cousin will have one station. If we each get a bear we might go after another one. (No quota= 2 Bear limit)

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
