Wind

5 posts in this topic

Here in Brainerd we have had some wind for the past week or so. Is it similar to what is going on up on URL? I have a old military friend coming to visit and I wanted to get up there take a lash at some crappies. The wind issues are something I'm trying to avoid. Any input appreciated.

The wind is always a factor on Red Lake and it has been blowing for a few days, best you can do is come up and launch and se what happens. Remember you can launch out of the east side at Westwinds or the River for East wind, North wind and calm days, South winds, calm days and South west winds Morts on the south shore is a good place to launch.

Just remember Upper Red is not a pond, it is 100,000+ acres of wave making machine so try to be aware of the weather to come to save your hide and the weather previous to save your day of fishing, when it is calm fish it like a shield lake and when the weather has been rough fish it like a river while keeping your eye on the sky, you do not want to be a spot on this map in rough seas:

Work took me away for a few weeks. I'll tell you the people in Chicago are so envious of the fishing we have here. Kinda cool to have so many think so much of our backyard. So I didn't get up there DW how did it go for you?

The ice is fine. I have a lot of standing water because my house is dark color. Come up and enjoy this weather. Ice is 24-30".a little snow left out on ice.

Nick, you did a great job finding good fish for everyone.  Wished I woulda brought at least one rod and my flasher for the short time I was there.  But it was good to meet y'all face to face.   I got a hankering for some pannies now.  Might have to look for some tomorrow.

I had the same experience today. Tons of little gills and very few big ones pike were not going on anything on tip ups today though. Wasn't fishing your area but figured I'd chime in. I had anywhere from 17-29 inches of ice with some water on top ice is great yet.

Still plenty of good ice on Bartlett Lake today. 16" where I was at. No standing water on the ice yet. The shorelines were in good shape, too. Too bad it will probably all be trash by Tuesday.   The bluegill were biting well this morning, but for every decent sunny I had to throw back about eight potato chips.   The Northern were slamming tip-ups baited with shiners. Too bad for me I brought suckers. I caught a couple Northern, and a 16" largemouth as well. I would have liked to get out to the airport lake tomorrow morning (after a trip across the river to get some shiners  ), but I have other things to do. The backwaters around Winona will just have to wait until next December.
