The north country again shows the city boys what the game of hockey is all about in the state hockey tourney. Way to go!!!

All Norhtland finals. Hermantown and Duluth Marshall in 1A and its is looking like Grand Rapids (up 3-0 over Burnsville 10 min left 3rd period as of this writing) and Roeeau in 2A.

Could not be better.

This is a great time of year. I don't have a favorite but, I love the quality of hockey. You got to love Minnesota hockey. laugh.gif

My two cents... this simply shows even more of why there should NOT be a two tier tourney for hockey. I am from the "cities", and both me and brother played in the tourney in different years (not private schools, and not the burbs either) and we both we in the one tier time. He was the in the last year of "The Great Eight".

And I got knocked out by Hibbing, a much smaller school in population, but the northern teams are indeed great. I always loved them from when I was a little kid.

I edited out my thoughts on two tiers wink.gif

(Sorry for my words if you are a two tier fan.)

finally the last few years the northeren teams are turning it up. it sure seemed like a rough few years for them. Glad to see Hill Murray where they are, dang private schools. I would love to see a single champ in the end, maybe a big 16 team tourney, not a fan of the 2 teir system. Sad to say this is the first year in 19years I haven't made it to see any of the games live, had a 11 year run where I never missed a session. boy those where fun years w/ the buddies dreaming of playing in that tourney. What a blast!!!

Where is Cretin this year? didn't even make it to the tourney. Rapids had a bad final game last year but there are no southern teams in the finals this year, can't argue with that.

Go Rapids

Rams crush tonight 4-1, Rapids will be outclassed unless White goes on a tear.

I always loved our annual "northern trip" in hockey. I loved to make those guys cry. Don't think they had ever been beaten my 10 or 20 goals. Usually played in the Hibbing tourney and eveleth or mesabi tourneys. It was hard to get invited back to these tourneys, they didn't like to get worked over like that by a southern twin cities team. I remember palying eveleth, between periods Gaolie changed equip, all defense played forward, and vice versa. Goallie got 2 goals at center in 3rd period. Can't beat that kind of fun as a kid. I hope Hastings can get their act together soon, get rid of a coach, and quit losing all stars to Shattuck- St. Mary's. Games will be on soon, go roseau!

Obviously as you can tell im from St Paul but.. I dont think there is one city team I have cheered for in years like to see the little guys come down here and show these recruiting schools how to play a little bit!!! But some dam good hockey has been played this year!! No matter who youre cheering for.

Don't think for a minute that those northern schools don't do some recruiting themselves. But it is great to see the smaller schools shine at this time of the year.

March Madness. Bring your A game or go home early. grin.gif

Way to represent the North Marshall, Hermantown, Grand Rapids and Roseau!

Watch out for Roseau again next year guys.

I was at all of the Thursday games. Roseau was the best team there, and deserved to win the tournament. Although I still think Holy Angels and Moorhead were the two best teams in the state this year. Section 8 should be strong again the next few years, with Moorhead and Roseau battling for the chance at state...

Of the 79 state high school boys hockey state champions...41 have been from "outstate" and 38 have been from the "metro". Pretty close!

I love the original tournament too. The coverage now almost tottaly ignores the class A bracket. I remember Greenway 1987 #1 team in the state until bloomington kennedy. But everyone is supposed to be able to get to the tourney now even though most of the sections include teams from the cities.

There should be 1 class in hockey, period. It would encourage competition and definitely avoid a lot of this "Ford vs. Chevy" type discussions.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
