Which Battery configuration for me……

PierBridge

Question

I just picked a 24 Volt Vantage 76 thrust Trolling motor so I need 2 new battery’s, I can get Interstate’s for around cost so that’s the plan.

I have a 16' Sea Nymph SC with 40 HP Mariner so I don’t want to add any more weight then I have too. I currently have a dual purpose Interstate battery that is my only Battery and runs everything, starter, finder, lights, live well, bilge.

Being a dual purpose and being a bit older it often doesn’t have enough juice left to crank the motor over at the end of the day, I do have a pull start for back up on my motor so it’s not that big of a deal.

I’m hoping I don’t need 3 battery’s but that’s what it’s looking like.

Option 1. Two New group 24 or 27 deep cycles along with my current dual purpose battery or possibly a new Starting or new Dual purpose battery.

Option 2 Two New group 27 or 31 Dual Purpose or Deep Cells that run everything.

If I go with option 1 can run anything other then Trolling Motor off the Deep Cells? I do plan on going to a Color sonar eventually and adding some more lighting along with a stereo I know my current Dual purpose can not meet this demand.

Thanks Pier.

I don't think you would want to risk it with just two batteries. If you troll all day then go to start and no go then what. Plus all your electronics and starter are 12 volts if you only use a pair of batteries you will have to wire them in series for 24 volts for the trolling motor. So you would have to disconnect the 24 volts to run the 12 volt stuff. It would be a hugh pain three batteries will make it much easier.

PierBridge, Ya your current battery is shot. Its not doing the job with now and theres no bow mount hooked up to it.

I've gone with many different brand batteries and Interstate hasn't stood out to be the best. Well I should explain. I have a gell cell deep cycle thats going on its 10th year. Then again I've had the same battery go bad in two years. I've got the Wallmart(Sams Club) battery thats going on it 8th year. A 115 Amp hr deep cycle Wally World brand can be boughten for around 60 bucks. If you get two of those they'll power your 24 volt motor for days on end as long as you don't run around at full power.

I'd go deep cycles and not a dual purpose. That outboard isn't that big and isn't drawing that much on the battery.

In fact I have a 40 Merc and have been using a deep cycle on that, the same Interstate thats going on its 10th year.

Heres the clincher that iff stated about the 24 volt system. I'm not familiar with the Vantage but the three pronged plug will give you the 24 volts at the bow mount but 12 volts at the accessories and starter. If thats still possible then as I said unless your running around at at high speed witht eh electric then you should have enough juice for the starter. Also the 24 volt on that boat will be more then enough thrust.

Thanks guys, Walmart is my second option for sure and that would save me $10 a battery plus it's tough to beat their return policy my problem is my Walmart has a poor stock of Marines only group 24's.

Maybe I'll try Sams tomorrow.

Thanks again!

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.
