So who's all planning on coming out to the Horseshoe chain for cool cats? It's a great time every year. Here's a link to more details.

I'll be there. I'm working on Dan Thiem as well and from the sounds of it he and Alex might be making the trip as well.

Papa Grump how big is that cat in your avatar?

I'd put money on you if you would catch one of those during the event!! But getting him in would require you to be fishing in a spearhole.

Flowage should we hit up CoolCats? I think we could bring some of our river techniques to the event and have a good time! 17lber through the ice cough cough.

I don't suppose anybody would be willing to give me a ride out to the spot, as I am not familiar with the lake. I would be willing to meet you at the access or in Richmound.

As we get closer let people know when you'll be there. Hitching a ride shouldn't be an issue.

There's also a map posted in the thread where the link in my original post goes to.

See you there.

Wouldn't want to miss it! I am looking forward to this event. Hopefully I'll make a few new fishing buddy's. Maybe I'll have a panfish bite going nearby that some of us can take advantage of in the afternoon. smile.gif See you all there!

I'll be there for year #5 along with a few of the boys from the BP Cat League

Brian, I guess I have been invited in on your group also by Jim from my bowling league.

What are you guys all bringing? Just portables or should I bring the wheeler too? I have a wheelhouse but that might be a little overkill.

Dave- just the portable is fine since we will be driving out to the spot and staying for most of the day. I'm bowling this Wednesday and will clue you and Jim in on the plans.

I will be leaving from Arlington alone, so if anyone will need a ride just holler. You can call me if you like. I believe I will be leaving my house around 5am, but if you would not be able to make that we might be able to change those plans a bit.

I would really like to come to this event since I love to go cat fishin in the open water but have never done it through the ice before...Is it a alright idea to bring my 13 and 11 yr old boys with or is it more of an adult thing? and also what do I bring for gear as in lures and bait?

I plan to be there in a few weeks. Working on the wife to have her come out to a Get together. IF the weather is good, I think she'll come...I've got my fingers crossed that she makes it out at least once this year smile.gif

Looking forward to meeting a lot of you for the first time!

mpsteckel- Defianately bring the boys along. Family, friends and kids are what this event is all about. Kids are the future of our sport and the more we get involved the better in the long run.

As far as gear I use my normal walleye setups. Glow red spoons always seem good!

Just watched the 5:00pm news on wcco.com. Sounds like we may get 8-14" of snow. However there is a possible chance a small band could come over us with over 15" of new white stuff. Lucky us mad.gif

Looking forward to the event but the weather , I am hoping, won't put a damper on our day.

Sounds like the snow will all be on the ground before the event. The problem will be getting out to the spot. We might try to snowmobile all the way from home out to the lake if I am in town, or trailer them to the lake. Com'n guys we are Minnesotans, a couple weak winters seem to have made some of us soft!!:)

Sounds like the event is officially cancelled. A post from Rick:

Deitz, Joel and I have talked it over using Chris's local info and with the predicted heavy snowfall with the associated issues and safety concerns we have decided to officially cancel the get-together. A number of folks need earlier notice than waiting until Friday and it does sound like we will be getting hit with much more than the 4 inches which would in Chris's estimation be enough to severely hamper attendance to only snowmobilers. Joel will be contacting those sponsors who have donated to see what they want to do.

Sorry all. Next year maybe we can plan on Papa Grump to be our snow plow back-up???

That's too bad, given the forcast even if the weatherman is remotely close it'll make travel very difficult.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
