when do you start night cranking? (Shallow)

Due to having young children, most of my fishing is done after dark. I am really looking forward to mille lacs fall bite again this year but was thinking that maybe I could start getting out now for some runs on the pond. Anybody started this early in the past?

I normally start with the first full moon period in sept. Varies a little every year, but the fish have moved real shallow as of late on the south end

When the water starts cooling down the fish will start moving to shore. I'm sure you could catch some now, but I usually wait until September. Even then it's more of a numbers game than a size game until the water gets below 50 degrees (45 degrees is better).

I'll stand behind Steve's ice rods!   I was able to get a nice collection of them last week.  Some panfish rods that I hope to work out tomorrow, and some walleye/laker types that I used today.  Great feel, light, and well built.       I connected with a couple mid-20 inch lakers today and couldn't have enjoyed the fight any better on another rod.  Very happy!   Thanks Steve!
