St. Louis Smallies

4 posts in this topic

I'd like to fish the St. Louis for smallies but need some help.. I don't want to know your secret spots but if you can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate some info.

What parts of the river hold the bass now?

What do you look for in terms of cover for the fish?

What kind of lures produce the best?

Thanks in Advance

Try surface lures in transition lighting in clear spots between weedy areas. The weeds are easy to find right now. A jig and minnow pitched into pockets in the higher current areas works well. I have every reason to believe that shad raps would work well but there is a lot of stuff to hand up on. Look for rocks and structure. The warm weather may be driving the larger ones deep, lately the biggest seem to be around 16-17" with lots in the 14" range. Probably landed 20 or 30 this last weekend and it was only mid day fishing. smallmouth exist from Lake Superior all the way up as far as you want to go.

Well we accidentally caught a few well walleye fishing in Spirit Lake. They hit spinners tipped with a worm in about 6' to 7' of water. I would guess there are quite a few in that area as we seen a bunch surfacing as well as the few we hooked. shocked.gif
