Public accesses are more dangerous because no one can tell you about ice conditions.

can anyone tell me the dangers of driving on mille lacs out of a public access? I would like to hear from some experience. I've seem people drive in some cracks near shore on the north side and go in. Kind of scary.

I would not recommend it. I'v done it one time. I guess if there are other guys out there and you follow there tracks then its ok, but that would be the only way Id drive out a public access. The ice up there moves around so much day to day.

Prime example going on right now. There is a guy who used the public landing down by the casino. He is now hung up on the 7-mile. He has only seen two people all afternoon and have not been able to help him. He should have come in with them. He has been out there for quite a few hours. He is calling resorts to get him. There really arent any in his area so the Casino or the Sheriff's dept will need to do it. It is now dark and he is still out there. He saved a road fee; but whats it going to cost him in $, time, anxiety etc.

I wish I lived 3 hrs closer and knew where the guy was. Regardless if he used the access or not, I'd be in his back pocket. Sounds like the same kinda deal with the fisherman that fell through the ice last winter on Red.

I agree someone should help him out, but there has been a number of time you see people drving vehicles out that barely should have on the road let alone the ice. A 2 wheel drive is not enough to get around once the snow starts to fly.

No. It was not possible at any cost from my location to his. If it would have been possible, I would have gladly helped. The issue of safety has nothing to do with $7. If anyone has any concerns regarding the safety of public landings just stop by or give me a call and I will dicuss with you.

So this guy got stranded on the 12th, it's now the 15th. So what happened? Anyone know? When it comes down to it, we're all in this together.

I fished on Millacs for the first time in eight years this past Saturday. The person I was fishing with had a specific destination in mind and suggested using a public access. I was pulling a wheelhouse and agreed with you that we should pay the $10-15 bucks and run out on a maintained road. After purchasing bait, we inquired on the closest resort with a road to out preferred destination and were told to go out of Hunters Point. When I arrived at Hunters Point, I went in to pay and was informed that the fee to access the lake with a wheelhouse was a 3 day pass for $35, I said I did not need a 3 day pass, just overnight. I was told this is the minimum. I found this outrageous to say the least but paid the man and went fishing. Upon returning to shore sunday morning, I called a friend in the fishing/hospitality business in the area and asked if these types of fees are the norm for the area. He told me no and he felt it was criminal. After an experiance like this I can understand why someone would be inclined to forget the resort and try a public access. I hope the majority of resorts on the lake are not opportunists looking for someone to gouge. One thing is for sure, whether it is 8 days or another 8 years before I return to Millacs, I will be going out of someplace other than Hunters Point resort.

Don't be surprised if you have the same expierience out of another resort! From what I've seen, alot of the resort owners on Mille Lacs are GREEDY!

Call around. Many places have 1 day passes. We have them inexpensively and we go to quite a few areas with our roads. 5 & 8, sliver, deep rocks, humps, pike point and Banana. If it will win you back to the lake, I'll give you a free pass.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
