Took the afternoon off yesterday and headed up to the Rainy. Only fished for about 3 hours, and two of us put around 50+ fish in the boat. The average size was around 16"-18", and we released five that were over 20" with biggest one taping out at 26 1/2". Bundle up and get out there people, you won't be disappointed. 1/2 oz jigs, some minnows, and you'll be netting fish in minutes. We were anchored in 10-11 feet of water, but I doubt the depth matters much right now.

Wow is right. Sounds Like you had a good time Jon. I'm Jealous! We will be going up on January 13th till the 16th. Getting A sleeper. I never hear anything about anyone catching eyes from shore any time of the year. Has anyone ever seen someone shore fishing with any luck?

My dad was up there the last two days. 4 eyes over 4 pounds yesterday, one over 9. Today he caught a few more around 3-4 lbs as well. Released too many too count in the 15-19 range. Said it was the best fishing of his life, never seen anything like it, amazing.

Two of us went out on Saturday and it was the best trip i've ever had on the river. We fished for about 4.5 hours. we caught in excess of 150 walleyes. The biggest being about 8 pounds.

Hey Dan, I look forward to seeing ya January. Too bad you can't make it before the river ices up.

Ran out of bait twice yesterday, stopped counting fish after 200.The only frustrating part of it is I can't seem to break the 30" barrier. Had a 29 & two 28s in the boat, but I'll be darned if I can hook a 30. Oh well, it sure is fun trying. Hoping the weather will hold til next weekend, no doubt I'll be out there. Anyone else think they'll be out?

Jon, I got to quit reading your posts. It hurts too much LOL. I hope we can work something out to get together. As we will be in a sleeper and not mobile and not sure where we will be on the ice. If you're going to be out there and mobile I have a cell phone and could bring the GPS if you have GPS. I can't wait to get on the ice. Any hints on tackle? I'm going to pick up some Go-Devils to add to my arsenal. I have heard a lot of good things about them. I can use all the help I can get. I have to out fish that TackleboxMike guy or I will never hear the end of it from him LOL.

We will be heading up January 12th around 5pm from the Twin Cities area don't need to get there till the morning of the 13th. So anyone got any good watering holes along the way that four thirsty guys could stop at? How about a good place for breakfast in Baudette?

Walleyjon. Due to your recently posted information, I'll be headed up Friday, possibly sooner if I could just shake this work problem on Wednesday. Still using shiners? If so where are you finding them if you don't mind? Thanks.

V-local,

We got some live chubs, and frozen shiners at "The Fishing Store" right in Baudette. They're right on Hwy 11 across from the big fish. Didn't matter what was on the jig though. Plastics probablly would produce too, but I didn't try any. Shoot me an email eyeslayer(at)hotmail(dot)com. Maybe we can meet somewhere along the line.

Jon

Where on the river were you fishing out of? Clementson, Birchdale, in Baudette? Was any color jig better than the other?

Poutwhacker,

I went out of Vilas, and Frontier landings. The only two colors we used were orange & yellow, both were equally effective. I did have to change from a 3/8 oz to 1/2 oz the first time out, which made a big difference. Technique is simple, but you will have to leave the gloves off when you're dropping the jig. As soon as you feel the bottom, stop giving line. Slowly raise and lower the jig. The fish are basically inhaling the bait,so as soon as you feel resistance, set the hook. Oh yeah, remember to retie your jigs after 10 or 15 fish (check hook sharpness too), it really sucks setting the hook, starting to reel, and breaking off. Don't ask me why I metioned that, just take my word for it blush.gif. Good luck.

We were up a few weeks ago and fished deeper (16-20Ft) I have heard people fishing a lot shallower. How deep have you been finding them lately.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
