going to kettle falls through canada?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be staying on the ash river and want to take a ride to kettle falls and the dams. Looking at a map I see the dam is in canada and even getting to kettle falls I would most likly be going into canada. Is this ok I'm not sure what I can and can not do.

The international boundary runs down the center of the channel to Kettle Falls (one of those rare places where you can look south into Canada) but you can stay in the U.S. all the way to the Kettle Falls docks no problem. Just follow the channel markers and make sure you have a map, you don't want to miss the turn at Bivo Island!

You are allowed to travel on the border waters without any permits. You can stray into Canadaian waters while on route to a US destination, but you may not fish, stop on the water, or set foot on Canadian soil. If you want to fish Canadian Waters you can obtain a remote border permit from the Canadian Customs either by mail or in person at any border crossing. Fort Francis would be the closest location to the Ash Trail. They cost about $25 US and are good for 1 year. If you fish Canadian Waters you must have an Ontario Fishing License and can only have live bait and a receipt from a Canadian bait store. Crawlers packed in paper are the exception. You cannot have a US limit and then go to Canada and catch a Canadian limit. This can be a problem because the limit for US citizens on Rainy is 1 walleye in the slot size.

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.
