fish house break in on ottertail

Recommended Posts

I heard tonight that there was some fish house break-in's. I haven't been able to check my house yet, but I will this weekend. What kind of people do these things. They must be pretty poor or jealous of what other people are able to afford. Just wondering if anybody else has heard if this has happened.

I heard that the break-ins are up to a total of 20 houses now. I talked to a few gentleman that had there houses broke into, these people have not been stealing anything, just breaking everything. They busted up his Vexilar then snapped all his jigging rods then broke out the windows. But they did not steal anything. I dont know but I believe that they are kids... I guess they are traveling by four-wheelers? I just hope that over Christmas break it does not get worse... Some how we need to catch these people and use them for an example. I mean throw the book them. I just dont understand why they find it neccessary to do this.. I put mine under insurance just in case..

That in my mind is worse then stealing it. At least if they would steal it somebody would be using it. But to just break everthing, that's totally uncalled for. Was this just one night that this happened, or is it occuring again and again?

I know many people are now just leaving their houses unlocked, and taking everything out when they leave. Now when those rat punks come, it isn't any fun.

The way I see it is if they are in my house there on my property and If I ever caught those little punks in my house me and my friend Louisville Slugger would have our way with them. I don't care how old they are. Sometimes a good old *** kicking is the only thing those punks understand. You leave your house unguarded trusting the other fisherman and this sort of thing happens. (Horrible) Well I hope they catch them and throw the book at them hard and make them replace everything.
We fisherman need to look out for each others fish houses and watch odd behavior going on around others houses even if you have no idea who's ice house your checking out. I know I would really appriciate it if someone went over and stopped some punks from vandelizeing my house. Well good luck getting them.

AMEN! I'm all for finding the little vandals and giving them a beating. I will be out over Christmas break for two weeks, sometimes I stay over night. I hope they try my house that night!

A little upbeat note for you folks that had your houses broke into. I had my house out on Swan Lake 2 years ago, got a phone call that my house had been broke into. They broke down the door to get in and stripped it clean, close to $1,000. in damage and missing items, found out that they ended up ripping portibles open and breaking into many others also. One night a gentleman was fishing when a guy and gail came to his fishhouse asked how the fishing was then left on a snowmoblie, he heard the sled stop, then like a ripping sound, called the cops who came out and nabbed them. They had to have destroyed and taken over $10,000.00 worth of property. I got everything replaced and money to fix fish house. They went to court, only thing is they were kids got some community service and had to pay for everything, witch I am sure they are still working on. I received a check from them a year latter. Thing is these people are stupid and will come back because they think they can get away with it. Keep your eye and ears open and they will get caught. Good Fishing.

Don't kids read books or even play video games anymore. I am guessing sooner or later they will be caught. It makes it hard to enjoy something you love to do when you have to worry about some punks damaging your property.

Too bad its not legal to boobie trap your house when your not there. Do something like when the door opens they get a dousing of paint that just wont wash off easily. I think the paint would be alot more humane than what I was considering...Might make identifying them alot easier! Just a thought.....Paul

Paul,
Me and a friend were thinking the same thing. All you would need is one of those deer hunting cameras that mount on a tree with motion sensors on the wall opposite of the door or on top of the house were your door is so it takes pictures of whoever comes by or breaks in. You would need to build a strong plexy glass box & mount it were they wouldn't be able to steel it. Maybe just even put it on a tall sturdy pole on top of the house they can't reach or break down.
Could also have a motion sensor set up like a vehicle has were a horn goes off and you would have a red cop car cherry like light atop of your house telling other fisherman somethings going down.
Just some ideas we were thinking of. Need to do something. They are just going to keep doing it unless we fisherman figure out some security.
The only other security system I was thinking of was a electrical shock as soon as you touch the door that would nock the robbers right on there asses. That might teach them a lesson. Probably get myself accidentally though instead so that one isen't the greatest idea.

A few years back I had my house broke into on a lake here north of the cities, They cleaned me out along with 20 or so other houses. My ins. company is from down south so to their amazement when I spoke of $250.00 for auger, $100 stove plus $500-700 in fishing equipment, poles skimmers locator etc they were a lil shocked, but still paid it. # weeks later I lost my keys and brought a bolt cutter with and a new lock, Well some watchfull eye called me in and with in 10 minutes I had the DNR pounding on the door. from a report of a break in.. I laughed and sent him on his way with a big thanks for the quick response..

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
