Fishing report for the St. Louis River

Now that the weather is  drying out a little and the bay and the river are starting to clear out a little I headed out yesterday morning to do some fishing.   Crawler harnesses with yellow and fluorescent blades and fire tiger worked the best. All fish were caught anywhere from 4 feet to 7 feet of water.  Hit every flat I could find from Spirit Lake all the way down to the bay. The fishing picked up when the wind picked up. Water temperature were in the low 60s.  Nothing fast and furious just steady

Well, the river fishing has slowed a bit but still fish to be had. I tried a Lindy rig on the flats and trolled slower than I would with a crawler harness and picked up a few that way.

Is it me or have others noticed a huge supply of under 15" walleye this year in the river/bay?

yes tacklejunkie  lots of under 15 inchers this year but a lot of good eaters also.  well any way on to a report trolled the bong bridge  flats  to high bridge  did good trolling slower then ever before crawlers and green seem to be the ticket... Have not herd much news on the alloweze bay action in a long time....

Been getting some smaller eater channel cats between HWY 2 and Brookston. Cut and stepped on pike sucker minnows and crawlers are working. I even caught a walleye and few nice smallies on the cut minnows, which I thought was odd, but it was a neat surprise!

Picked up some nice crappie and a couple eater walleyes on Allouez Bay the other day before the rains. Trolled crawlers with one light split shot and others with bottom bouncers.

I was surprised at how big the crappie were

Anybody been hitting the river lately? After fishing Lake Superior yesterday, I parked my boat at the dock at that landing in Allouez to clean my fish  and saw some walleye carcasses in the garbage there.

One walleye  was huge and filleted out.  What a waste of a giant fish. You wonder if the person who caught that will actually eat the fillets

Can anyone comment on ice out for opener on the river? Looking to head back up to my home water and get at least one good day in on opening morning! As I'm sw of the twin cities I can't see it for myself.

From what I can see from Thompson Hill the river looks to be ice free.

It will be a raging zoo this year no doubt.  Come early...

Always do, fished the river and pretty much only the river my whole life. Until I moved down to this zoo. At least the inland lakes are opening up...hopefully that'll quell the pending swarms.

Thinking about picking up some Lindy Lil Guy for opener, anyone have any experience with them? 1/1.5/2"? Color?

Lindy little guys can work decent enough. Also try the new Northland Fishing Tackle Butterfly blades, and of course should have the old regular crawler harness.  Happy the inland lakes are going to make it, There will be good fishing on them..

Well opener was nice but poor luck. Started on Arrowhead flats and ran up to Spirit, crossed that up to the mouth of mud lake and back down to top of spirit and that's it. Saturday 545am-2pm we only caught 2 snake pike, a 14.5" eye, and a ~36" musky broke off after 1 min of fighting, caught a glimpse.

My report isn't much different. Two 14 inch walleyes. a rock bass, a nice perch, and crappie. Might hit the local inland lakes for a while

Fishing is picking up on the river. Trolled crankbaits from Arrowhead Flats to Barkers. A lot of undersized walleyes but did get my two 15” for dinner. Seen a number of sturgeon leaping  out there. Four to eight feet of water

Not much has changed since my last report but have been using crawler harness more with success. Big, bright blades but zip on the bottom bouncers. Tried Allouez Bay but no luck. More action on the flats between the two bridges.

Couldn't agree more on a needed slot!! See big fished killed on every trip to the river. The tournaments should all be CPR that would be a start,

The last two times on the river have been slow to say the least. Trolled Shipping channels, river channels, and all the flats. Crawler harnesses and crank baits. Anybody having any luck out there?

Went out Sat and drifted crawler harnesses on the flats and it was slow but did take a couple home

Sunday got very warm and the bay was calm so dragged some crankbaits in 6-9 feet and got 5 between us

Musky opener is such a gray area as one would think it opened on the river last weekend with the several musky anglers we watched fishing last weekend?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
