Hi, Just thinking about going to a hard case for my ice rods, but not sure i will like how big they are compare to my ice bag.. Looking at the otter sportsman or the frabill rod safe. Any thoughts on these cases would be appreciate. Thanks

Quite a few here, myself included, have went to a hard sided gun case. I got a Plano single rifle with scope case for $20 on sale at L & M around the beginning of deer season. I can get 4 rods in there, it's tough, & cheap. A lot of options out there if you go this route.:2c:

I have 3 hard cases and 5 of the Ready Rig "bags". Each has their place. Since you already have a bag(s) I'd recommend adding a case. One thing to be aware of with the hard cases is if you fish with any inline reels they won't fit in a lot of the hard cases. I found a "Lakes and Rivers" brand that is deep enough to hold them. Just something to keep in mind.

Plano makes a Protector Series single-rifle and a double-rifle case that are excellent values. I own the double-rifle case ($30). It'll hold about 6-8 setups with ease. The double-rifle is quite a large case at 50" long, so I don't carry it along anymore. I just don't have the room in my Clam Kenai. It does make a nice case to have at home for storage all year round.

For portability sake, I now use the Plano Pro-Max 1535 on the water ($30). It's a a take-down case, only 36" long. Holds 3-4 rods perfectly and fits on the bottom of my Kenai sled.

WIth both cases, I take one half of the foam out and collapse the spinning reel handles. I've never had a problem yet, and I keep fragile rods in there like UL Widowmakers and SUL Tickle Sticks and such.

I second this. I spent too much on the otter hard case... it's okay, but you can get a pretty HQ gun case for the price.

Plano Single Scoped 48" Hard Rifle Case is the 1 I think I have. Still only $20 online, it was $25 in the store & $20 on sale

Looking at it a little closer, I think it might be the SE series of the 1 I mentioned. Mfg # 1010-475 & listed for $30 now online. I would think FF would have something comparable, if your not near a L & M

I have the Otter case and haven't had any problems at all with my inline reels fitting in it.   I do fold the handles on my spinning reels though.  I have 5 inlines that are snug as a bug inside the Otter.  It can be a bit bulky at times, but it protects very well.  I don't see myself ever using any other case in the future.

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.

I think electric items have their places, I just don't think large commercial jobs are going to be able to work well with them. Can't see a logging crew out in the woods all day changing batteries!
