Gull lake access

Recommended Posts

Could you tell me if there is a resort or business that plow a road on gull and charge a fee ?

And if not how is the Hole in the Day  access ? Thinking of coming up tomorrow with a wheel house.

Any help would be appreciated.

That's one location on our short list for tomorrow as well.  I'm taking my wife out for the weekend but haven't decided just where yet.

I don't have conditions scoped out either but feel pretty confident I won't need my plow to get to wherever we might want to go.  If it's worse than expected, leave the house at the landing and do a trial run to where you want to go in just your truck.  It'll be easier to follow your tracks with the house afterward.

Of course there might already be plenty of tracks to follow anyway.

It's pretty driveable out there.

So how did you do last weekend?

Poor, like many others.

We were on fish but the bite was definitely off.  It felt like laker fishing with all the lookers and few takers.  A couple walleyes landed and a few lost.  Sunday nights fish dinner was topped off with a couple crappies.

We at least had some perch to keep my wife entertained.

We'll probably hit it again this weekend though since we still had a good time and there aren't a lot more weekends we can go with the big house.

I was over on the other bird lake. Sat -10 below in the morning and was a bit crazy with Perch, Tullis, Pike and Walleye. I lost 3 picture taker eye's right at the hole during the even run! Auug, a bit rusty. Sunday the weather was even nicer and hardly a bite! Tried all the same spots and a few others from 11' to 38' feet and nothing happening? Crazy. :(

Sounded like a good mix of fish. :)

The walleyes I lost were because I couldn't get a good enough hook set on em.  I was using my light action crappie rod with 2 lb test.  Even the ones I iced had the hook come out while the fish were in the hole.  I was just quick enough to get a hand on em.

I tried the same presentation on a walleye rod with 8 lb test and never actually got bit.

I think my hook set issue were that all the bites were on the drop, so I just didn't get a go set. And they were hard to get the head turned up the hole being of the larger size. That's my story anyway!:lol:

Sorry Jmnhunter, didn't mean to ignore your question but I didn't catch it before.  We got the crappies on another lake that weekend.

Out on Gull since yesterday looking around.  I understand why you ask about crappies.  None that I know of out here.  Only two walleyes landed last night.  Working on tullibees right now.  I can raise em but haven't gotten hit yet.

My walleye was a money fish - if I woulda caught it on the 28th!  Oh, and in the contest area. ;)

I didn't mind even though the spaghetti was good. :)

For those planning on going to the Extravaganza - bring your ice cleats.

Very nice fish! Thanks for the heads up on the ice cleats.

Do you know how the access is holding up with this warm weather ?

LOTS of traffic on the Hole In The Day access over the weekend.  It degraded noticeably from Saturday to Sunday.

There are two paths heading out.  The one going straight ahead has a bit of a ridge at shore that longer houses/low clearance vehicles might have a little trouble with.  The one to the right is angled and doesn't have the ridge but developed a hole at shore Saturday night.

I'm hoping it doesn't get any worse but probably will before the weekend.  We were planning on being out overnight before the contest but plans seem to be changing.  Especially since it was reported that a vehicle went through by Hunters Point over the weekend.  Hunters Point is on the Southwest side of the lake but makes my wife leary of taking out truck and house back out even on the Northeast end where the contest is.

Sorry for the bad news.  I'm still crossing my fingers and will check the access again this week.

There was 20 at the site.  I'm not worried about the main sheet of ice, just the access and near shore/shallow areas.

Plenty of ice everywhere else I drilled.

Same song and dance as 95% of the "truck through the ice" pictures I've seen this week.  Those reeds the guy drove through...those heat up from the sun, melting the ice, and creating a weak spot.  That's not an accident...that's stupidity.

I think it's one of these small tracked foreign vans. Pretty light but that ice looks way to thin. Isn't that down near the Gull River area?

Today was the first time I've seen the pic on a monitor.  I didn't realize the "sticks" were reeds but as soon as I figured that out I knew why he went down.

The comment that I cropped out of the pic mentioned the combination of bad ice and fog.  And I know that night was really foggy out there.  Pretty easy to get into surprises and disoriented in heavy fog.

But you're right on the money - stay away from reed beds!

We didn't get any snow out of this last system and temps are staying below freezing so hopefully the access firmed up and stays in good shape.  The surface of the ice probably won't have much snow on it come Saturday.  Winds out of the NW 10-15 and a high of about 28 predicted on contest day.

Everything top side is locked up.  Any snow that's out there is hard packed and there's not much of it.

The access basically just had one lane open tonight so everyone had to take turns with going on/coming off.

Plenty of people getting set up out there.

  • 11 months later...

The so-called Bullhead bay access is not public,  It is privately owned and because of the dangers of thin ice and liability it is not an access to upper gull.

@donethat

Where is this access you speak of?  I’m not familiar with “bullhead bay”.  Is there a problem with people trespassing?

The access I was referring to last year looked pretty public to me.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
