My 2016 archery hunting is officially over. It started this spring with a giant Tom then I moved on to Ontario where I took a monster black bear. I shot bowfishing tournaments all summer killing time until the whitetail season kicked of here. The deer hunting wasn't bad,I only had a few sits where I didn't see any deer. I passed  a few does through the first two weeks of season because I was recording my hunts and didn't have enough camera light. Finally on October 1st I had a big doe step out at 20 yards with a hour of shooting light. I made a perfect shot and got it all on film. After watching the video I decided to switch over to lighted knocks so you can actually see the arrow.

I took some time off from hunting waiting for it to get closer to Halloween and my favorite time to be in the stand. On Wednesday night I couldn't explain it but I had a feeling it was the night. It had rained all night and up until 2 that afternoon cloudy with the temps in the low 40's and a rare east northeast that I needed to hunt my favorite rut stand. At 5pm I can hear what sounds like a deer in the damp leaves but it wont show itself so I hit the grunt call. A couple minutes later I hear a deer coming in,a doe and 2 fawns so I record them  for a minute and they wonder off.

At 5:55 I figure its time to rattle so I grab my grunt call and do a couple really deep nasty ticked off grunts and a snort weeze. Following right away with heavy rattling and finished with 2 buck roars. At about 605 I hear a deer coming down the same trail as the doe as im standing up I hear a deep grunt. I turn and grab my bow as this buck steps out at 12 yards and he's a shooter. So I start turning to get a shot and my knee high boots rub together and squeaked he stops dead and stares right up at my. He tries to pick me off he knows something isn't right but I have the wind. He turns and starts quartering away going trough the thick stuff where I have one small opening at 30 yards. I'm following him at full draw and see he is heading to my lane so I shift over there,he stops with just his head in my lane looking back at me then starts walking. As he steps into my lane I release and watch my green nock arc through the air and bury deep into the bucks side. He bolts out of there and into the little slough,I hear him splashing and watch as he stop and stands there about 50 from where I hit him.

After that it gets quiet I didn't hear any splashing or thrashing that normally happens when they expire. So I had my doubts,I did get it on video so I watch it over and over but still couldn't tell for sure. I txt my buddy that I stuck one and I'm sitting till 7 and going out the long way because he ran right towards my truck that was parked a couple hundred yards away. We run to town and get fuel in the truck then to the adult beverage store for some refreshments. We get back to my truck around 8 this gives it almost 2 hrs from the time I shot.

We were going to sneek in and check out the trail to determine what we should do next. As we get to the spot where I shot it takes a minute but we find a drop of blood that led to another drop then a continuous arterial spray,it was everywhere. We follow that through the grass in water over our knee high boots till we look ahead and see him piled up in the water half floating half resting and the grass. Turns out he dropped right where he stopped running. My arrow had went in 4 inches behind the last rib and exited in his armpit of the off side leg passing through the center of his heart.

Congratulations on an incredible season A-S!  Love the tom picture, heck all of the pictures.  Spent my whole summer building the shack on our 40 and have been bow hunting twice.  Whacked a fawn for the freezer in an intensive harvest area.  Son got a nice doe on opener.  Looking forward to getting rifle season going and done so I can focus on the metro bow hunt.  Nice year for ya!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
