Beacon Harbor trip

Had a very nice trip to Beacon Harbor Thursday thru Friday noon.  The bite was good between 7p and 10p, and again starting at 6a on Fri morning.  The afternoon was a little slow, but my granddaughter caught her first walleye 5 minutes after her dad set up her dead stick.  I post a pic but can't figure it out with this new format. We caught a total of 28 with the biggest at 19" and one other just over 17".  The highlight of the trip was my 7 yr old granddaughter caught her first walleye and ended up with 3.  She is ready to go back.  John and crew did a great job, setting us up on fresh ice in 14' of water. Due to a medical issue I wasn't sure if I'd be able to make another trip, but my two boys said you sit and fish, we'll take care of loading/unloading.  It was really nice to get back up and watch the Vexi once again.  Good to see Ann's smiling face and bubbly personality.  Maybe there's another trip in the future, but if it doesn't happen this was a good trip and good memories.

PS yes I did catch some fish too.

I'm happy that you had a good trip Bill. When Ann told me you were up I was heading out to see you but got sidetracked when I looked across the lake and saw Buddy's plowtruck stopped with the hood up.

The size of the fish is interesting. A friend of mine fished in the same area you were in 2 nights ago and caught 8 walleye. The biggest 23 and only 1 under 17. Tonight everything I caught was 8 to 10 inches.

Tks Hoyt4, didn't realize how much I'd miss it till I got back up there.  The boys said dad, you carried all the gear when we were learning, now it's our turn.   Some truth in that I guess.

It was nice to be back up there Kelly, especially to see my granddaughter catch her first walleyes. I was hoping to run into you up there.  Shaky said to say hi if I saw you.

funny with those fish, one end of the house produced 90% of the fish, yup the side I was on...looool John had set us on fresh ice and it seemed to work out.

Two of my sons, my son in law and our friend from Georgia are booked with Jonny Feb 12/13.  Please say hi to Patsy, I surely hope she's feeling better.  Take care of yourselves

That is how it's supposed to be. I did that for my old man last weekend on Red. My goal was just for him to have a good time and maybe a fish or two. Well he did all that and also caught his biggest fish of his life 43inch pike. Was a blast and he is just like a little kid. He is also counting down the days for retirement. Friday this week he is done working.

Amazing how fast time goes I have been going up to Red Lake since I was 6. Been 34 years hunting and fishing it's pretty much were I grew up duck, bear ,deer , grouse ,snow shoes and fish.

Caught my first Red lake crappie when I was 8 and then we started to target them more then walleyes once we knew they were there. Was not like the crappie boom but you sure could get a lot of them if you know were to start. Caught a lot of walleyes 2lbs seemed to always be our biggest as a kid still could get through the gill nets.

Go out and pull whitefish nets was always a blast . It's great country and you can pretty much do anything up there all year long.

Bturck trust me you kids will rememeber all the times as kids and now making trips with Pa.

I know I do and will try and keep making more as long as he can still go. So I hope you still have more memories to make with the boys.

Good Lord willing, it will happen again.  I still think of my dad every time I see a full moon( other times too ). But he always like to night troll with a full moon, and we caught fish.  Glad you had your dad out there.  We as dad's always like to hope that we raised kids to appreciate Mother Nature and respect people.  Sounds like your dad taught you from an early age.......much good luck to you and pops

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
