BEEBE ICE REPORT

Recommended Posts

I checked today. About 3.5inches, 75-100yds out from the landing. A few guys had been out a little ways. I'm guessing the main part of the lake is thinner.

Drove by tonight and saw a car in the east bay. Wasn't on the lake myself, so not sure how thick the ice actually is. That spot was thick enough for a car I guess!!

I measured 9 inches on a local lake yesterday. Not saying lakes are safe to drive on now but I would imagine after these temps the next few days the trucks will be all over next week.

I swung by Beebe yesterday afternoon to check about driving out. At the main launch, checked one spot about 50yds out on hard pack and ice was almost 12 inches. Check out further in the untouched snow and ice was only 7.5inches. Checked another spot there and only 8.5inches. The snow really messed things up. I won't be driving out there anytime soon.

I also check another area lake and the same thing. Ice varied from 8in to 11in.

The trucks and cars are piled up on Buffalo. I measured 10" on Sunday and the trucks were flying by me lol

fisher, did you use a ruler? I had guys tell its more but seems it's all guess. I may be looking for an old sled to pull flip-over house.  I had a 292 yamaha many years back that little sled could really pull. Wish I had it now, i could run every where, plus a few spots nobody goes.

Yup. Measured 11" in a different spot today. This is my first year with a 3/4 ton truck so I will be holding off a bit longer than usual.

Really even with close to a foot of ice we got there pretty quick considering these lakes were ice-less a month ago.

Wish I could make it one of my favorite little tourneys to fish in.

How did the contest go, any fish caught?

I was out on the east side and had 13-15in of ice. Several trucks out, so I drove my Ford Ranger out. Fishing was slow for me. This cold week should help a little for ice. The snow is pretty packed down, so the ice shouldn't be so insulated.

Me and my sister went to the contest, didn't catch anything but got some door prizes! It was mostly sunfish caught, two northerns and two crappies. Pretty slow but it was fun!

I have seen lots of trucks out. What is the ice thickness in the bay? I drove out a week ago or so but I am looking at pulling my wheelhouse out there this weekend.

I had from 14 to 15in of ice out there today in the East Bay. I drove out and it sure cracks alot this year.  Sure, I finally start driving and now this big warm up is coming. Saw several wheelhouses out yesterday and today.

Thanks for the report, I am worried about the warmup as well. I will go out this week to check the ice, I am looking at being out on Friday. I will report what I find if I make it out. Thanks again

Checked ice yesterday, found 15-18 pretty much everywhere I went. I am still hoping to get my wheelhouse out Friday if the ice isn't eaten up from the warm weather. Not too many posting on this website anymore so I will make a game day decision when I get there. I probably won't stray too far from the public landing. I did have 15 and 16 inches in the east bay.

Drove by tonight, about 30ft of open water at the landing and ice is black. The bay by the gravel road was open for about 100 yards out. Wouldn't think it will be long. guess it depends if we get some wind or rain and if the ice holds on til the cool down next week. I think it will be gone soon.

Also Schmidt had alot of open water and Green Mountain was all open.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
