Coon Rapids Dam to 169 Bridge

Since no one talks about it I will start a thread. Been hitting it lately in the evening, Fishing mostly Catfish, not much going on. Water temp 76, water flow medium I'd say, water is clearing up really nice..I have to say after many years fishing the Mississippi (since 73) it has really cleaned up well, don't have the staining on my boat  I've had in the past. As usual there's lots of pleasure boats, jet skiers etc but seem to be able to get away from them for the most part. Mayflies (the little white ones) are starting to hatch in the evening.  Good Luck.

Interesting area from year to year, can be really good come September, this time of the year is tough if you don't know spots. One of my buddy's comments was "this area has to be fished like a lake, Smallies move from deep to rock piles and back again most of the year to feed". There are a lot of small culverts that have rock piles by them but you don't know where they are because of the higher water. Now that they don't plan a winter draw down they'll be hard to find, if they do and you have a jet go find them, Try watching for where streets are close to the river a lot of them drain into it. Raining? The shore by the college can be red hot from a boat, big Northerns and Smallies. I had one year the 16/19 inch fish lived in front of my old house, caught them on a daily basis then they were gone. Hard to fish because of the boat traffic in summer is an understatement. 169 up to Kings on the Champlin side has been very, very good to me over the years, lots of 18+ fish and most of the folks that live there are friendly.

Not Kings, I meant North River Park, I usually started at the last house before it but you will find fish in the shallow weed patches to the park. Upper end of Kings Island has everything, Walleyes , Northerns and Smallies.,

On that Champlin shore stretch, there are a few deep holes 50/75 feet from shore so it won't hurt to as you do the shoreline to cast out into the river to.

Well if you can dodge the wake boarders, jet skiers and casual pontoon boat cruisers there are some fish to be caught. Got out the other day with an old friend after work. Worked from the Rum River down to the Dam and put some fish in the boat..nothing too big but fun..did get the single Walleye again..can never seem to put a pattern together. Did start doing some hucking for Muskies also. Tip of the trip..Shadraps

Mouth of the Rum can be decent on the downriver bank but spotty, got the only Walleye I ever caught in that stretch at the park side with a cast, nice one to, on a Shadrap, to the shore 10 feet away from shore fishermen at night, didn't see them until I hooked the fish. That side of the river has a lot of big culverts that can be good for Smallies and Cats, tubes and Senkos. White has always been the go to color, spinners and buzzers.

I wanted to know how big a boat can you launch in the area of the rum and Mississippi? I have a deep v and wanted to know if I would be able to fish that area of the river with the boat. Any info would be great! Thank you

The launch is usually pretty good, take it slow and stay between the marker buoys, if it's a heavy boat keep it trimmed a little high, mid way down there a shallow spot but you should be fine.

Fished for 4 hours.  Caught 2 under 12" smalllies and 1 17". All hit on a 3" black grub bounced off the bottom in mid channel in about 10' where the bottom was rocky.   I forgot my net last weekend and lost at least another 17" in the same area.

Regarding the Rum boat launch, you can go upstream nearly to the dam  if you stay between the bouys....smallies like the bottom in the faster water north of the launch.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
