Also curious about Pokeg reports. Haven't heard too much except a quick night bite right at dusk where people are lucky to catch 1 or 2 in 30-40 ft. Anybody know what kind of ice conditions are out there....especially around the Kings Landing and Drumbeater areas?

Spent last weekend on Pokie with very poor results. 3 overnights on 3 different humps marking very few fish and catching 3 walleye, nothing over 14" for the weekend. Set lines did not produce either. 20" of ice out of kings and near the islands. Weather was very uncooperative, making mobility difficult. Hopefully things will turn around this weekend.

Looking to take the wheelhouse out on pokegama for the first time ever this weekend. Just wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction. (access points, depths, colors, etc.)

Not looking for particular spots just a starting point. PM if you do not want post here.

Thank you

Tioga Bay would be a good area to start looking for crappies and gills.

Walleyes should be found on main lake humps/saddles in 20-40' of water.

Not sure on how much ice is out there, so use some caution.

It's been poor. 1-2 fish per night at best for me. Deep humps, but its frustrating fishing! I see a lot of guys driving trucks around, but someone just went through last saturday night. Not deep but stuck good I guess.

If I were you I would look for an area where two points come together and fish the deep portion in between, 50-60 feet maybe. The fish will trade between the points throughout the night. You might even get a crack at lake trout during the day. I can tell you there is ice out there and it has been cold; so you better pack your extension.

On second thought, just go to Winnie.

Use your GPS and maybe a feller can get lucky!

  • 4 weeks later...

Fished Pokegama this past Friday to sunday and not much action. Rented a shack through a guy there and was set up on a hump in 40 fow. Caught maybe 6 walleyes in three days only 2 15"ers and rest were 10" and smaller. Lots of baby perch through out the lake. Scouted Tioga bay and pooles bay for crappie but got nothing but large mouth bass. Decided to try the end of wendigo arm sunday morning in between two points in 30 fow and nothing but small perch and a couple cigar walleyes. A guy with us met a friend who has a shack up there said the bite was good three weeks ago but not now.

A couple 13" eyes and a fat 3-4 lb gator. We started at 7am and the eyes were done around 9. Should have been fishing at 6.

Thank God for GPS. Wouldn't have made it back to shore w/o it around noon today. Talk about a white out!

I know they're only stocked in small numbers, but has anyone ever caught a lake trout through the ice on pokie? That would be a pretty cool surprise bonus!

They are there, but if people catch them with any consistency, they keep it real quiet.

Usually guys fishing walleyes will catch one here and there.

I've heard guys that spear northerns out there, see lake trout.

I caught a nice 7 lber in Sept. vertical jigging, so there are some nice ones in there.

I think a person would have to put some serious effort into catching lakers out there consistently.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
