little mcdonald venting water

Recommended Posts

I was just informed on a proposal for little mcdonald kerbs and other to move water from their lakes to other lakes. It appears most likely would be to send to little pine- big pine and rush. With the spotty information I have it seems crazy that the DNR would allow this when Little McDonald has invasive species let alone the idea of sending water downstream to change the levels in other lakes.

thoughts?

I should of added this will also end up in Ottertail lake with current proposal. How do the residents of these lakes feel- do you support this? is it a non event?

thanks

Water flows out of Ottertail Lake via Ottertail river, so not sure that it will affect that lake in any noticeable way.

South Turtle lake did this several years ago as well. not sure if the pump is still in place or not.

I believe the outlet of Rush flows to Ottertail lake? if so I would expect a couple of potential things would be water level in all these lakes downstream would rise at times and the possibly of the invasive species somehow getting thru whatever type of filter would be installed from Little McDonald. As we all know mechanical things fails- like pumps and filters.

they first wanted to outlet to Star, then into Dead, Walker, OT, etc. that didn't fly, so they must be looking to go to the pines, rush, OT etc.

i wouldn't expect this to work either.

I would expect all downstream owners to have those same concerns. Who did those residents voice their concerns to- DNR, LIttle McDonald LID? . Hopefully the residents of Big/Little Pine, Rush and Ottertail would get involved and voice their concerns as well.

DNR, yes. LID's, yes. but, also the OT county commissioners.

these things don't go anywhere without lots of meetings and public input.

thanks for the info. What is surprising to me there has been zero information that has been given to the proposed downstream land owners. I googled it myself after I found out and was shocked by the extend of work that has already been done on this. Some of the documents talk about a 2015/16 implentation. Not sure if they are hoping to keep this quiet till the last minute or what.

maybe someone from one eith Little McDonald or Kerbs will chime in.

looks like after they got shot down for going to star/dead, they hired a consultant to find another option for their water. consultant gets paid to find another option which is what they did.

now the LID board has to decide if they're going to go through all the laws and hoops to try and make it reality. with a hefty price tag, they'd assess the project cost back to the lakeshore owners in their LID.

just take a look at the added yearly assessments for the lakeshore owners if this were to go... 2-4k extra per year in taxes.

wow- an extra 2-4K per year on top of already high taxes. Can they force all homeowners to pay that. I would sure be ticked off if I had a property on Little Mac and the high water didn't impact me and then they asked me to pay 2-4K every year. no thanks

agree that it is amazing that no information has been given to those "downstream"

if people are against this it would probably make sense to call the county and DNR and raise your concern. I would also spread the word to your neighbors and get them involved.

here is a link I found info on this- http://www.lmkp-lid.com. Lots of other info if you google it.

also looks like the little macdonald lid is having a meeting at the Perham activity center this Friday-

Folks'I would say you got a problem and you better be proactive and start getting on them ARSES down in fergus.(that would be county commisioners)They tryed to jam a lid down our throats on Marion Lake last summer.Never heard a thing about it until I got the bylaws for the new Marion lake lid in the mail.Im like WHAT????It is plain and simple a taxation district that all the lakeshore owners get to pay an UNLIMITED amount of taxes to fix the lakes that the general public ruins. You wouldnt believe the dump they got in the bylaws.Lkeshore assoc that become lids need to have an insurance policy in case sued, take control of landings(put in docks, buoys, etc.pay for treatments for future infestations and it goes on and on.Good luck your gonna need it and your gonna have to push petitions.Oh I dont envy you.And by the way they hate Me and 5 others from Marion lake because we didnt belly up to them and we raised lots on cane shall we say.

new minutes are posted on the http://www.lmkp-lid.com/ HSOforum

crazy stuff if you ask me. Anyone downstream from this ever read this HSOforum? any ideas on where else to post the important topic. Whats new and shocking to me in this is the DNR acknowledges that you can pump infested water if it is ran thru a filter- crazy if you ask me.

take out an ad in the paper if your so worried..

i understand you don't want this possibly infested water anywhere else, but you are going to get it. too many lazy people in the world.

i live hours from there, and really don't care one way or the other, but if you drive around the lake you would see the damage it has done, and will continue to do. i think anyone that has seen the damage they would be understanding. the rising water has also affected many area roads, and that is a cost for the whole county, or township.

i would say the water has risen 6 or 8 feet since i've been going up there. it's not an issue of building homes further back. entire lots will be underwater if this continues.

newtofishing = new to research, problem solving

New meeting minutes are posted at- http://www.lmkp-lid.com/

looks like it is moving forward. As previous posters have suggested I would contact your county commissioner or LIDs on this.

As far as previous poster- I believe everyone understands the high water issue and sympathizes with them. But sending it to other lakes which will raise their water levels along with the possibly of spreading AIS is not the solution. You cant take a minnow bucket form 1 lake to another but you can send millions of gallons downstream- that makes sense how?

you should do a little research on their proposal and you would be making informed posts. as of now you are simply ranting. do the research, and then make a post.

MNdnr is utterly useless. The otc commissioners are utterly useless. You figure it out. What I would like to know is where does all the money from fishing licenses, hunting lic.,shelter lic.,boat lic. and all the other fees and taxes were charged go.Unfortunately its not the resource that it goes back to but rather the low life scum in the metro area that dont want to work but would rather collect off the dole.I hunt in 4 other states and by far MN. is the worst!!!!!!We got way too many game wardens that are running around trying to tag people for doing something wrong(you know violating laws like not having a fire extinguisher or you didnt dump the minnows that nyou paid $20 for etc.)This state and their taxation and districts can shove it where the sun dont shine.Yes the dnr needs hire some people who know what the heck theyre doing and can manage the resource. And that means going to the Iowa and Missouri standard where theres 1 game warden per county.Think of all the extra money they could spend stocking lakes and putting money where it should go.

I see a bill was introduced in the state legislature so all of Minnesota can pay for this water venting project.- WOW. If you are against this I would suggest you let your voice be heard ASAP. call your lake association, LID , DNR, state representative.

strict guidelines as to when they can pump, as far as water levels. they aren't going to drop the lake to whatever level they choose, without any concern for water levels down stream, or upstream as it looks now.

thats great news that they will monitor when to pump millions of gallons of water each day from lakes designated as having zebra mussels thru a filter system to the ottertail river system- look out below!!

bison? is that an option that has been considered? Seems like a good one? are you on little mac or downstream from the proposed venting?

thanks

I think electric items have their places, I just don't think large commercial jobs are going to be able to work well with them. Can't see a logging crew out in the woods all day changing batteries!
    • gimruis
I agree on the choices.   I didn't mean to say that a battery auger was better or greener or whatever.  I could care less about that.   It just seems that "most" ice anglers have made a switch to a battery auger in recent years.  That's all I was saying.  I know about a dozen people who regularly ice fish and they all have battery augers now.  I bet if you conducted a survey of all ice anglers, the majority would answer that they use a battery powered auger.

Best weed eater I've ever run with great longevity is Echo, I'd check them out

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."
