Carlos Avery

After traveling up north and seeing minimal deer for the past few years, I'm wondering how hard hit does Carlos Avery get? Can you get away from the crowds if you're willing to walk or paddle?

I have not deer hunted there, but the WMA also gets hit hard by waterfowlers. So that adds to the crowds/human presence.

Been many years , but started deer hunting near and in carlos avery in the 70s back then it was hunted hard and there were plenty of deer had relation in the area was taught how , Think difficult the further back in the better those swamps hold some secrets , the deer know humans well and know how to evade , You wont find them on the dry ridges ever during daylight you got to know the lay of the cover to pinch them some times a little hunter pressure is required. Good Luck

Carlos Avery has a lot of very large bucks in it. I live not to far from one of the smaller areas of Carlos Avery and we see some monster deer on trail cams but rarely see any shooters during shooting hours. The key is to get out find a location and a way to get back into the cover where pressure from the easy access points will push deer to you. You may have to dig in and walk a long ways to get off the beaten path a bit. waders can be a great advantage to access some of the high ground areas but when traversing cattail swamps it is best to have a buddy along and some rope in case you go down in a deep spot. Scouting should be done early season and in the daylight to figure out your best gameplan. there are a lot of little trunk roads with access to larger tracts that don't get as much pressure so get a good map of the area you are looking at and be willing to do some driving and possibly even some door knocking to ask for permission to cross folks property to access the state land they may butt up to. Good luck!

I shot this guy at Carlos Avery a bunch of years ago. It's the only deer I've ever seen there bowhunting, so I wouldn't really recommend it as a great place for numbers due to the pressure it gets. Since it's walk-in only you can get back a ways and get some space to yourself, though.

Thanks guys. i think I'll try the kayak next year to reach some of those out of the way places, at least give it a look. That's a sweet buck!

I went fishing with my old man and we caught and released a few fish. Next time I will have to hit my normal lake.

Crow Wing County - abiding by the rules.   Part of the problem with our land is that it IS the food for the area.  The oldest woods around with lots of oaks.  Plenty of does and a few yearling bucks during the day with occasional glimpses of adult bucks.  Otherwise the adult bucks are night visitors without the rut it seems.   If I didn’t have cameras I would be questioning if there was anything to even bother trying for without a doe permit.   Not complaining - just getting to know what’s going on better.

Thought you got some of your own land a year or two ago?  Aren't those bushels of apples working?

Haha - nope!  Still been chasing those deers!  I was super glad to have a doe donated to us by my buddy last week so we had something, but really wanted a second.  Plus there’s that piece where a guy just wants to fill a tag himself!   Pic is in moose’s thread.   A friend in the area heard my shot yesterday.  He came to help with the recovery (low blood to start and it got dark). As soon as we got done with the high five at the recovery I said “Now… I can go ice fishing”.

Me too.  But it’s over now.   All day sit today.  Spent much of it watching an 8 pointer chase some does, then bed down where I couldn’t get a shot at him.  He left just before 2pm.   This guy came out at last light.  I love deer hunting but I was ready to be done.

Finally made it back out on Vermilion today.  The ice is in much better condition than I expected.  The spot I fished last Friday (3/8 mile out from McKinley Park which had only 3-4 inches of ice) had 9½ inches of ice today (top 1½ inch was frozen slush).  I walked out a little over 1/2 mile to fish and found 9 inches of ice (top 1½-2" was white ice).  I found large patches of slush at 1/4 mile out and 3/8 mile out from the landing, and then didn't find any more.  A couple of vehicles found slush at the landing as shown in the attached picture.  Any locations with large accumulation of snow are likely to have slush underneath (even after the -20°F temps the last 2 mornings up here.  Most of the surface was snow free or hard pack thin snow, very easy to walk on.   Lots of ATVs and sleds running around out from the Park, even as far as Ely Island and the small island before Birch Island.  A couple of ATVs dragged a small wheel house and a small skid house out of McKinley Park bay on the east side.  I'm sure that there will be a lot more vehicle traffic this weekend.  I'm going to wait until late next week to drag my lightweight skid house out with my sled.   Fishing was much better today than last Friday.  Caught 50% more walleyes, and they were much larger than last week.  Caught 4 eyes over 16 inches including the 22 inch pictured.  I caught one eye at 20 inches exactly but didn't dare keep that one, even though I think my adhesive tape scale measures fish longer than they actually are.  Started fishing at 9am and didn't catch an eye until 11am.  Then I would catch a couple about every hour.  The best bite was around 3pm.   If you venture out, be cautious of the ice condition, courteous of other anglers, pick up your trash, and good luck.
