Zebra Muscles On Green

Recommended Posts

That sucks if true but it was inevitable with all the infested lakes already in the state. There just isn't a realistic way to 100% clean a boat or trailer regardless of how much money people want to throw at it...

There was an article in yesterdays Willmar paper that said it has not been confirmed yet if it was or was not a zebra muscle.

Just seen todays paper and it has been confirmed that there was a single zebra muscle found on a dock in Green Lake.

Whats to prevent their spread from water birds like loons , pelicans , ducks , geese? The veliger can float around for months and attach to anything. Just look at the spread of curly leaf pond weed and eurasian millfoil to every lake and pond in the twincities. Most of them have no boats or canoes etc on them. All was spread from birds, turtles or connecting waterways. All the feel good efforts of power washing at boat landing may slow down but will not stop the spread. Just look at other invasive s Pigeons , House sparrows , Starlings, Asian Lady bugs thanks organic farmers!!! Dandelions, purple loostrief, buckthorn. Once its on our shore its here.

  • 2 weeks later...

The news said green was infested. Kind've insinuating that more zebes may have been found in the lake.

I read an article about it in the outdoor news last week. The president of the lake association has a great solution for boaters...all boats that launch in infested waters should be quarantined for at least 30 days afterwards! HA!

I just talked to the boat inspector at the landing on Friday night, there has only been one found and it was 2 years old and it was dead! I don't believe the lake is infested and they have not found any signs of more at this time.

I think the person found it at a different lake and brought it to green and said he found it on his dock just to get them to check the lake and to start a scare. People that live on the lake don't like outsiders on there lake even if it does bring revenue to spicer.

That's the rub, their lake? My fishing dollars put the walleyes into their lake. Plus how did the zebra mussels get into the lakes with no access? did the pink bird of paradise just drop them in. frown They should read the dnr booklet, Did they ever think it could the rich and dull that live in twin cities but have cabins on green? What was forest gumps favorite saying Stu*** is as ST***pid does?

They should read page16 in the 2014 fishing reg's, unnamed lakes, wetlands and ponds around the state with zeb's in them. how did they get there?

One zeeb found,The DNR searched the area for 3 days found nothing more!! But now the lake get the label as infested?? It may be a precautionary action BUT WHY? no proof of any more just one a resident reported as attached to his dock. The DNR received a unattached mussel that was said to be attached.I have my suspicions that it was a scare tactic to reduce lake traffic.maybe I'm paranoid??But after 3 days of searching NOTHING was found

Maybe the lakeshore owner that supposedly found the zebra mussel was tired of the lake association wasting his money on the $18k pressure washer to "kind of" clean boats coming into the lake? If it is a legitimate find, the president of the association made a fool of himself on TV by saying publicly that the lake isn't infested because one adult mussel was found. He was showing his ignorance of the AIS issue in a BIG way-or perhaps a single sterile adult zebra mussel somehow managed to grow to adulthood and die without reproducing......

If that shore owner didnt want to pay for cleaning stations he now has to put out for another thats being installed at County park#5 on the NE side of the lake.Personally the ignorance isnt put on the prez of the assoation (I despise lake assoations doing what they believe is right, science not involved just their perception!)How do you suggest a single STERILE zeeb made its way into his hands.I believe that this single speciman is a plant warrenting funding and DNR attention, and more parnoia than should be.

I'll add and ask you what tempurture do zeebs die? Have you read or know anything of the 1 washing station soon to be two? How it works and the tempurature of the water it outputs? Look it up! The people on Green have bucks and dont want the mussels! They are doing better than any other lake in this state to prevent the zeebs. Its the people who dont care about spreading them! With the lake shore owners finacial status this may be a start to restrictions of the public. It has already happened to pleasure boaters anchoring and having their fun.I dont live on the lake just 6 miles away and follow this closely. And believe before people make statements they should be up on whats happening on Green,As of all aspects even involving the county commissioners who lean in their favor.Tax dollars speak and restrictions may follow!

Guess I should have made it more obvious that I was being facetious when suggesting a "single sterile adult zebra mussel". I was trying to point out the Lake association's president's ignorance. Obviously, no such zebra mussel exists.

As far as the high temp boat wash garbage... It does no good to wash the exposed surfaces of a boat on a trailer. I don't care how hot of water you want to use. Until the boat is lifted off the trailer and the entire plumbing system is flushed, what good is being done? How many boat launches around the lake? I know of four. Washing a few boats at one or two access points during daylight hours only is another example of showing your ignorance of AIS!

I have on my own A.) taken my boat to use hot soapy water, to spray on carpet areas and other areas of boat. B.) Used Ivory or dawn dish soap to rub into carpet after trail has been out of the waster for 3-4hrs. C.) Squirt the soap or place a small bar of soap in the bilge area to kill anything that may get in that area. My little part, does not cost much many a little time, but it it keeps the chances of these little monsters from getting into some of my favorite lakes. Why Not do it?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
