I see the gophers beating ND. Who are the Sioux?? They don't exist. Pick a mascot already. I think the gophers need something to get fired up about. Big ten rivals don't do it. No bigger rivalry than with ND.

As far as the finals, BC looks like the class of the field. BC 5-2 (with an empty net goal) over gophers unless Wilcox stands on his head.

My bad superduty.

I tend to agree on your bc take also.

As long as its not a NORTH DAKOTA vs BC finals.

I need to cheer for someone.

Im not convinced that BC is who we think they are. They, to me, appear heavily dependent on their top line. Gophers beat them once earlier this season.

They are tough to handle and I am very impressed with their 17 year old goalie, but I dont think they are some unbeatable team like the one that destroyed MN in the Frozen Four 2 years ago. That team was unreal.

So its settled then, we agree its Gophers vs Union in the Final right? :-)

Its going to be a war, all teams are deep and good in all zones. BC might be a little top heavy with 1 big line but the rest of their team is still very solid. UND is probably light on the offense compared the rest of the field. MN is depending on a lot of freshmen which can be scary this time of the year. Union while being a great team will always have their strength of schedule questioned because of the conference they play in. You can make a argument for or against any one of these teams and you wouldn't be wrong.

SCSU's Nic Dowd still in the running for Hobey!!!!!

Hey, that's the best I've got right now... whistle

Unless MN lays an egg or Gothberg stands on his head MN advances.

BC has a scary offense but Union is awfully good, especially on the blue line. That game should be a battle, go Union.

When the gophers and und meet all bets are off. Throw out the records, hot streaks, powerhouse scoring lines or great goal tending these games are usually very competitive.

There is no other team I hate to lose to more than und.

I think the BC kid has this one locked up, no one has been this close to 80 points in at least a decade.

Agreed. Andy Miele was the only winner in recent past with more than 70. 50-65 pts is more typical most years for the winner.

Plus Leblanc just won it last year. That shouldn't make a difference, but sometimes I think it does.

If the Gophers play like they can and did against SCSU they win out. If they play like they did in the 2nd period against RM they are done. If the refs call all the cheap dump, UND has no chance. If they let it go UND stays close. BC has 1 line. Play the body against that line and let your other lines beat theirs. I don't know much about Union, but they had to win to be where they are.

Hot goalies, missed chance, and refereeing can all cost or win you a game.

Gophers 5-2 as und will fall to the power play goals.

Gophers 4-2 with an empty netter over BC

Ya I am a homer. Go Gophers!! RAH!

Since the NCAA doesn't want the Frozen Four to compete against Basketball, we have this weird 2 week break again. Too long if you ask me.

So here's the Hobey winners in the past 20 years (not a coincidence that I chose to start with a Bulldog, my freshman year in college):

'94 - Chris Marinucci - UMD - 13 games, 1G/4A

'95 - Brian Holzinger - Bowling Green - 13 years, 93G/145A

'96 - Brian Bonin - UofM - 12 games, 0G/0A

'97 - Brandon Morrison - Mich - 16 years, 200G/401A

'98 - Chris Drury - BU- 12 years, 255G/360A

'99 - Jason Krog - NH - 8 years, 22G/37A

'00 - Mike Mottau (D)- BC - 7 years, 9G/51A

'01 - Ryan Miller - Mich Stat - 11 seasons (current), .916 SV%

'02 - Jordan Leopold (D, current)- U of M - 12 years, 65G/139A

'03 - Peter Senja - CC - 49 games, 7G/4A

'04 - Junior Lessard - UMD - 27 games, 3G/1A

'05 - Marty Sertich - CC - 0 games

'06 - Matt Carle (D) - DU - 8 years (curent), 37G/187A

'07 - Ryan Duncan - UND - 0 games

'08 - Kevin Porter - Mich - 4 seasons (current) 35G/54A

'09 - Matt Gilroy (D) - BU - 4 years (current), 10G/36A

'10 - Blake Geoffrion - UW - 55 games, 8G/5A

'11 - Andy Miele - Miami - 7 games, 0G/0A

'12 - Jack Connolloy - UMD - 0 games, Europe so far

'13 - Drew Leblanc - SCSU - too early

So '94-'03 you have 5 very solid / great NHL players. 50% success rate. Two more that contributed to some NHL scoring. From '04-'13 you have one good player (Carle) and two that contributed to some scoring, but hardly NHL success stories. Now granted a couple of these guys are still developing, but there seems to be quite a difference in NHL success rate between the two periods in time.

Hobey Baker curse, or just smaller guys getting the scoring in college that don't transition well to the bigs?

Solbes, interesting post. We were just talking about this yesterday at work and the only person I could think of (off the top of my head) out of the past Hobey winners who had a dramatic impact in recent memory was Miller.

I have to wonder if the fact that so many of these guys leave early now has any role in this, but its definitely interesting to see it.

College hockey as a whole is producing a lot more talent than ever before, but like CM mentioned the top end talent usually moves on after a year to two. If you look back at all the Hobey finalist you start to see more NHL names. Even then a lot of the stud NHL players never even get nominated for the Hobey while they are in college.

I'm already getting butterflies. My buddies are mostly Whoiux fans so if this ends badly I will never hear the end of it. If the good guys win I am noble and would never rub it in.

I know the feeling, know a few Sioux fans and I seem to talk way more hockey with them than anyone else, should make for an interesting Thursday night.

That is one thing about UND fans, they do (for the most part) know their hockey. So, its always good to go back and forth. I certainly miss that rivalry every year even when they had our number.

And I will throw in a complement too.

Sioux fans are every bit the equal of Packers fans when it comes drinking alcoholic beverages ... grin

The Hobey is Gaudrau's. I was just pointing out it was the only thing I had to root for the rest of the year.

I'm really interested to see who the Gophs get in the finals. I hate BC but I have a feeling Union with their great D can bump them off. BC wins if it turns into a shootout.

I agree with this. BC can be beat (Gophs destroyed them one of the two times they met early this year) but you have to lock down that top line. After that top line they are just an average team IMO. Their young goalie is playing well beyond his years though.

Getting pumped for the game tomorrow night.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
