Spearfishing - Where are you now?

I belong to a truckers site where we post where we are and random thoughts and topics. Thought we could try that here and see what happens. If you don't want to post your lake that's understandable. Just let everyone know what you're seeing and any fun stuff that's going on.

I'm sitting on Fish lake. Had a carp that was about 20 pounds come through. No pike though so far.

Yesterday we were in the brainerd area. Saw seven pike, all decent, one was probably mid 30's. Lots of tiny perch and a few tullibees.

The water was real clear, and the fish were kind of skittish. Tried getting some video but they didn't stick around long enough.

I must have bumped the sights on my spear, because I missed a nice little eater. :-) We did get video of that, but I don't know if I want to post it.:-)

My wife caught one of the tullibees and wanted her picture taken since it was her first. As I was getting my phone out, she say's oooohhh it stinks, throw it back. I thought she was going to throw up! LOL!

Funny stuff Sham. Those tulibees do stink but they sure taste good smoked. I was catching them on Mille Lacs a couple years ago and they turned the hole milky colored from all the oil.

By the way your white fish decoy brought in the winner at the gtg.

laid up today with the flu!!!

Lucky you!

I had a fun day even though the pike didn't cooperate. Me, Joe, Mollie, Archery, Merk, and Fred spent the day to on the ice.

There were a few wrestling matches and some pike football played. Good times.

had to do some welding on a friend trailer and wheeler then went out to one of the Stanchfield area lakes and saw seven small pike. One of them were no bigger than the decoy and by the time I got the camera ready it was gone.

Spent the day working on a fish house. Should be more cozy than the hub and much easier to set up. It took a little more effort than I would have liked but its done now. Cant wait to get it on the water.

Did stop at the bait shop in St Francis. Anyone looking for a Decoy Sucker they have some nice big ones in there. I grabbed one of the smaller ones thinking I might get out today, no such luck. frown I think you could have filleted a couple of the ones in the tank.

This has become a new source of entertainment though... The kids cat cant seem to figure out what to do next. Its one of the greatest things I have ever come up with. I'm not sure why I hadn't thought of it sooner. grin

Slush was so bad on my lake here in Brainerd that I pulled my house off Friday. In the process pulling it through the slush and ice chunks my house got all busted up. I might be done for the season or until I can drive out with truck...grrrrrr.

I wanna come up that way to spear ,but by the sounds of it. it doesn't sound like its at all easy to get around. How much snow on the ice? I have a cabin on loon lake and I am dying to try it for pike.

MJ--Im just west of Minot, with my house out on lake darling. If you have extra time or are going to be in the area and want to sit up there just let me know!

We sat on darling saturday and saw 13. 2 nice ones right around 8-9lbs. Speared one of those and a couple 5's.

Tried 2 different spots on lake sakakawea Sunday and only saw one 7lb that we speared. Really slow yesterday, kind of weird.

Thanks for the offer! I'm delivering in Garrison Wednesday morning and I have to turn and burn on this trip. I will definitely keep it in mind another time.

Went spearing once so far up north with family between first ice and snow storm. we did pretty well although I personally didn't see one. I won't be able to go spearing for awhile.

Just got home. Went out for the first time since the gtg today. It was pretty slow, speared two in the low 20's and saw another smaller one. Had a school of gigantic suckers that would swim through once in a while and keep me on my toes. Tried to catch one for a huge decoy but they weren't interested in wax worms...ooh well.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
