Spring Bite on the Rainy

Recommended Posts

There is no imaginary "line" on the Rainy River as far a travel goes. It is a navigable waterway. Unless you set foot on Canadian soil, dock your boat on their side of the river or tie your craft to a Canadian vessel you are free to be wherever you want on the river without an I-68 or a canpass. You are still subject to Ontario game laws on their side of the river but they do not have the authority to chase you onto our half of the river if you decide to move your boat over a few inches towards the south. A lot of people spreading paranoia and misinformation here so relax on the river next month and feel free to drive your boats wherever you want to on the river. If you have a couple of fish in your livewell and no Ontario fishing license don't beach your boat on the canadian shoreline and take a nap and you'll be just fine.

Guess I have been told wrong info by many up in that area. Thats what I have been told more than once. Not what the guy that got fined told me at all.

Guess it is worth a phone call to the Ontario office. Need to get some info from the horses mouth.

Call a port of entry near the Rainy River and ask to speak to an officer familiar with this specific inland waterway. I'm not advocating that anyone should fish illegally in Canadian waters but their jurisdiction does end in Canada and does not include the United States. Border Patrol cannot legally enter Mexico to pursue a suspect since it violates Mexican sovereignty and international law so the same would apply to Ontario game wardens.

Same thing I explained above and I tested it. Never again though.

After talking with the US Customs and Border Patrol and the Ontario CBP here is what I wwas told.

US Custom and Border Patrol agent told me I should not cross the line to simply navigate from point a to point b without the proper paperwork ie-Canpass or Rabc.

Ontario I asked the same question and thier agent said I could cross the imaginary line as long as I did not touch the Ontario shoreline and beach the boat. He also said, no alochol can be in the boat and NO minnows.

So, as always, when I am up fishing, I will be staying on the US side as I always have minnows in the boat like more than likely all fisherman.

As long as you do not have any minnows or booze in your boat. If you do, then you cannot cross the line. I think most all fisherman have minnows in the boat for jigging the springtime walleye bite.

I cant wait to get on that open river... been way too long for me.. If anyone is going soon and has room or wants company let me know..

As for the invisible line issue, I have always had an issue with it.. I can see no fishing or docking but navigating is ok.. beer or bait in the boat.. If you don't stop they should not bother you. But if they do, as long as you stop on the US side they can not deal with you... My .02 cents worth, if they want to enforce an invisible line they better mark it.. That's just real live in my book..

For those of you who are not currently aware...

We are now experiencing yet another winter storm. This one is slated to drop over 6+ inches of snow in the Warroad/Baudette area, and will be accompanied by 25-40 mph winds.

Our coming week's forecast calls for temperatures to remain below freezing until at least next Saturday, and the weatherman out of Grand Forks, ND, stated he did not anticipate ANY significant melting of snow until at least the end of March.

It may be a pretty small window this year, but at least we'll be ice-fishing for a while yet! smile

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
