dirty water and debris

Recommended Posts

Today the river was really dirty and full of debris - assu1ming the Forks let loose. Too much debris to even fish sturgeon effectively.

How long does it usually take for the debris to flush out of the river so it is fishable again? I know this rain doesn't help but just wondering what others experience is.

BB, How long does it take to clear on a normal year? I have been up there the day after and seemed to take a few days. I hope 5 or 6 days from now it should be looking good again..........

Up here right now and the debris is really bad and the current is fast. Fished 4 mile this evening for a couple hours, no bites. Had to use no less than 6 ounces to hold bottom. Didn't see anybody hooked up with anything while we were there. Going to check some spots further up river tomorrow. Rosalie's next to the Americinn has some good eats on the plus side.

Your best bet for catching walleyes on open water is outside the Gap. We fished 3/4 of a mile out of the Gap on the main lake yesterday in 8 to 10 feet of water. Caught one 18″ walleye, saw three others and two sturgeon caught. Little to no current (could have used a 1/16 oz jig) and water clarity near the ice was 2-3′. Boy did we get some color from the sun yesterday! Only heard of one walleye caught in the river the 2 days we were up.

Here's a few pics from the river today. Flooded mess is the best way to describe it right now. What is, or was, Frontier landing looking east.

Frontier landing looking west, pretty big ice flow w/logs

This one is from Timbermill Park landing. Quite a bit of debris, some ice flow, even saw a section of somebody's dock float by eek

Just completed a round trip from Hibbing to Baudette in 9 hrs! Next time I'm gonna call and check b4 heading up. River conditions were dangerous with the level of debris coming down. DNR. Told the resort that it will be awhile before this clears. My advice would be that anyone heading up in the next few days call before heading up. Burned up $95.00 in gas and a day of. Vacation today.

How far is the ice out past the Gap? ..and to clarify the "gap" I am meaning the one that you cross Canadian waters to get to LOW...according to Lakemaster and Navionics chips.

Even though their is [PoorWordUsage] floating down the river, is it still fishable as long as we watch out for the big [PoorWordUsage]? Coming up tomorrow morning, thinking of fishing the mouth and giving the river another day to clean its system.

The problem we had fishing at the mouth, was all the grass and leaves that would build up above your weight. Within a couples minutes, there would be a foot of junk built up the line. I don't think the fish can feed effectively with that much junk coming past them. Best bet would be to find some cleaner water either on the lake or possibly upstream by Pelland.

Traxx-I cannot believe how much the river changed in the matter of 3 days! When we were fishing it on Saturday, it was still at 'normal' levels, no debris coming down and sturgeon fishing was unreal! I can't believe you had to use 6 ounces to hold bottom! Insane!!!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
