Lake Lida Ice/Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Derby on Lida you can use a portable and use 2 rods per person. There is a roped off area for the derby and you need to drill your own holes so bring the auger. Price I believe is still $10 per person and have additional tickets for sale for some additional drawings when you get to the derby area.

Well...just got back from Lida...got there early this am..and it was tuff going, I mean we made our own road and it was not a lot of fun, some other pick ups, came after us and they went on ahead, then like a chicken I followed..fishing was slow at best...when we left, they were plowing for the derby..poor report on fishing, but it was a beautiful day to be on the Lake.

Not a lot of fish caught. only 1 walleye was registered i believe was 1.62 lbs. 2 northerns registered. Biggest was 11 lbs. I got a bite but it wanted to stay in the lake more than it wanted me to catch it so ended up with nothing for the derby. Looks like I gotta practice my skills at LOTW this weekend. Will try to get out to 16 mile (Archies) and plan to pull the permy back closer to Gull or Arnesons reef on Sunday..Then to the tourney in Alexandra next Saturday.

Not much of a chance to catch fish when there were 3 idiots driving their modified mtn sleds up and down the PLOWED trails every 15 min. Very impressed with them and the person who decided to drive my pickup 50ft without saying anything or asking! I guess if the keys are in it, that means you can drive some strangers truck. What a tool this person must be! Some of the joys of fishing in a village!

A 26 inch would have to be released. I hope it was not braught up to the weigh area. 17-26 for walleyes have to go back.

yes it probably was over 26 like i said was south of the village a ways so got up to the tent during the drawings. thanks for enforcing the slot limit on a comment on the online forumn. We have a comment cop on our hands watch what you say. Honestly really not neccesary I was just trying to update the indvidual who asked about the tourney and fishing conditions.

No--the only walleye (1 1/2 lb'er) was in the drawings. Was up there for all the drawing stuff.. so if there was a 26", it had to of been released. (hopefully).

Was a good time where we were at, but the snomobiles flying around were annoying.

I think heading to LOTW this weekend will be a good thing. Maybe run into some folks up at Arnesons Fri or Sat nite. Gotta get them skills tuned up for Alex.. Haven't gotten anything every year I've been there.. Time for the bad luck to get kicked to the curb...

I'm sure the patroling CO would be glad to give them a lesson-----it may be an expensive one --but one they probably wouldn't forget

yeah i get it ray. I dont eat fish and dont keep fish, I just really enjoy catching them so it doesnt matter what size it is it goes back in the drink. I think they taste like they smell you guys can have all of them. If they are meeting the size limits of course. wink good luck to everyone who gets out there. I will be out there tommorow hopefully the fish are active should be a fun day.

Was out yesterday (Sat), 30 feet..few nice slab crappies..mostly before 5pm..they sure were not running in packs, or at least it didn't seem to my partner and I. Our other group was right behind us in 26 feet, they had some nice sunnies, and one huge crappie..was not to bad getting around. Now we are heading for Lake Winnipeg.

Havent seemed to be schooled up all year. Just mixed in with the sunfish. Starting to move to deeper water and suspending a little higher. Lot of fish 4-6 ft off bottom now.

  • 2 weeks later...

Pulled the house out of the crappie village and put it on the clay point side of the lake on sat. Only caught 2 slimers. Very slow! Got checked by the warden at sundown and he said that he hadnt seen a fish all day on lida. Not a good sign. I thought the nice stable weather would help. Hope others did better than me.

Gillhunter, I fished 21fow. I just heard a report today that some friends got 38 slabs sat in the same depth, where I moved my house from on sat! Should of stayed there! Oh well. They fished all night untill the sun came up.

i went out on lida today to retreive the permanent house from the abyss the road out is flooded and in rough shape i took two houses of today and am very releived to have them off. The road out to the crappie village has a hole you can see bubbling up water and really flooding that area, if you go on that road stay to the left in the really flooded areas. As the hole is on the right hand side. just wanted to give you guys a heads up that its wet and doesnt look good i would imagine the road will just get worse with people trying to get there houses off the lake. Bring your water proof boots

the access was still in good shape this afternoon when we were getting those houses off you can see part of the concrete ramp but there was water running down it cutting ruts into the packed snow ice if it stays warm i dont think its going to get better that for sure. everyone be safe its rough going out there on the ice/water roads

Was thinking of trying to get out on Lida in the next few days....has anyone been out since the cold/snow/winter resumed here in the last few days. Last time I was out the road to Clay Pt. was in good shape, but the "village" area was pretty much inaccessible...

Travel is great on Lida. I was out on the lake this weekend and there was hardly any snow on the lake. You could drive and pull a house almost everywhere. I didn't make it all the way to the north side of lida but traveled most of S. Lida and the south end of N. Lida. I saw very few people fishing this last weekend compared to the last few weeks.

Hope you enjoyed the weekend at the lake house Jeff B. I have heard from a good source that it is pretty nice and so are the people that own it. Well did you drive around all day on Lida or did you cut some holes? Ice is gone here in Central Illinois and geting ready for the spring eye run up the rivers.

Going this weekend and am hoping to hit a couple new locations since the snow has been knocked down and the slush should be refrozen. Its a group of 6 of us going, do it every year and I am pumped!!!!! Have never done well for walleys though (any advice???), panfish (especially Crappies) we usually do real well. I found a new spot earlier this winter for BIG sunnies and then wasnt able to reach it again and now I am itchin' to get back to it.

Hi Kelly I did a little fishing, but it was slow. I was mostly entertaining family and company that weekend. I hope to hit the crappie soon. Hope the winter is treating you well. Later.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
