Big Cormorant Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Hit it last night. Had a nice and relaxing time. The bite was extremely light, thank goodness we have decent poles. Caught six kept four but it was awesome out. We found a nice nook out of the wind and it was fun.

decent size as well -- 15-19 inches.

It is far from hot but improving. Might as well stay home till 8 p.m. and leave at nine however.

I fished it for the first time on Wednesday as an add in boat for the FM Walleye's Thank You Veterans tourney. I did not do so hot...I found some pike in water from 14-28 feet but no walleyes...I must be too much of an esox type guy..hehe. Great job by FM Walleyes Inc taking time to take Veterans out fishing!!! They do a great job with this event and I was proud to be able to partake in it. I will definitely do it again next year.

There were a few nice fish caught but not too many...we fished from 4-7pm and I was starting to graph alot more baitfish and arcs as the evening progressed...I wouldn't say I got skunked for walleye...I just ran out of time. I am thinking once the sun hit the trees the walleyes picked up quite a bit.

Good to hear you had some luck.

Fished Big C yesterday. 1st time this year. Launched on the West side - too windy on the North.

Hit the West side first - out of the wind. A couple of Pike strikes right away at about 17'. I was pulling spinners, my buddy pulling jigs. Worked the weedlines at 15 out to 21 feet. We tried Shiners, Leechs, Crawlers.

Moved to the East side at about 7pm. Caught a couple of Rockys. At about 10pm we caught our only Walleye in 16 FOW on a Leech.

Not much for me on Big C so far this year except for some nice crappies which is now pretty much over. Been 0 for 3 in the last week for Walleyes. Seen a couple of 13" caught but that's about it. Been out during the high of the high pressures which always is after a nice cold front. Maybe that's why. One night I couldn't catch a rock bass.

Last NIGHT was SLOW

All three of us caught one eye each - -Woody's was 6 inches, Jason's was 14 inches and Mine was 19 inches. A lot of rockies and slimers.

Two buddies were out again on Big C -- they had one 19-incher and that was it. They pulled cranks as well after dark and nothing.

That lake is still way behind. only 57.5 degrees and little to no weed growth. The fish must really be confused ...

Next weekend I'll be at my daughters' in laws cabin. I no longer have a boat so the only fishing I'll be doing will be from their dock. Three years ago I casted for hours and never got a hit. The weather was crappy that time.I'm just not one to sit inside and just jabber. I gotta be outside doing something, even if by myself. This year I plan on picking up some live bait before I get there. This way, I can sit on the dock and throw out a floating rig and relax. Would I be better off with leeches or fatheads. I'm not fussy what I catch as long as it's not bullheads. If I still fish with leeches, will the little sunnies chew them to pieces? Or, should I get some larger minnows? Also, is there a baitshop in Cormorant or should I pick some bait up in Pelican Rapids, where I'd assume there is a baitshop.

Their cabin is on a peninsula on the south end of the lake, off Nels Erickson road.

I fished the lake sunday had friends out in the boat with me but we fished with crawler and a jig and I did a minnow. All we got were rock bass but they were spitting up crawfish like crazy.

Thanks, code-man.I guess I don't want to fish with crawfish then. grin

I suppose rock bass will bite on anything. Where is the nearest baitshop, coming up from the south thru Pelican Rapids and Cormorant?

Well X, if you feel like heading further north I usually have an open seat. Or anyone else for that matter! I like meeting new folks! I'd have to blind fold you though, lol.. j/k.

What do you mean by heading further north? I was hoping someone could swing by the dock on Cormorant in the morning, and pick me up. smile

I'd be more than willing to drive an hour north to meet you, but my daughters' in laws might think I was a bit rude. I know my wife and daughter would. whistle However, if I just jumped off their dock and went out for a couple hours, I'd be safe. smile

Oh well, you probably wouldn't let me smoke in your boat anyway. wink Just kidding.

Lol!No smoking in boat! That would be like saying there is no drinking allowed in my boat. Yeah you're right it probably would be rude! maybe next time, and I hope you catch something.

I was off by a weekend. It's actually the following weekend when I'll be at Big Cormorant.

I've been searching the net and can't locate a baitshop in the forementioned area. The closest I could find on the way is in Fergus Falls, and I don't want to leave the interstate just to find a baitshop. I'd think there would be something between Fergus and Cormorant to at least be able to grab a dozen leeches. Maybe not.

You can get all the bait you need in the vilage of Cormorant. just south of the lake.

Thanks much.

Were up on the north bay by the old Buckhorn and fish off the dock all the time.I use crawlers, sucker minnows and fatheads and catch sunnies, crappies, northerns and lots of rock bass. If the neighbors have a swim raft cast something out next to it on a slip bobber. No telling what might be hiding in the shade on a sunny day.

Well they already have the gas powered drink blenders for the beach, Mike. 🤙

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.
