Holland Lake Fishing Reports - Eagan

Recommended Posts

I was out there a couple of times in January and caught hundreds of sunnies - the biggest was smaller than a cigarette pack & I have the picture to prove it.

This lake has been covered several times. Basically, the trout are either hard to find or non-existent except maybe for the dog food eating brood stock that got dumped in there recently. Potato chip sunnies and the occasional hammer handle are the norm. Not worth the time IMHO. Good luck.

I went out last weekend and caught some good size sunnies probably twice the size of the one above and a nice crappie too!

When my grandson (6) saw that pic he said "Papa, next time you go fishing, take me and I'll show you how to catch the big ones." He then proceeded to show me a picture of a 13 1/2 inch sunfish he caught last summer. And the sad thing is the way my luck has been going, I'm thinking of taking him up on his offer.

I have caught quite a few trout in the spring to early summer on that lake, but never tried during the winter. I would guess you would need to fish real deep. How deep were you catching the sunnies?

Up north a nightcrawler floated off the bottom catches the bigger trout...no reason why that shouldn't work in holland.

I would like to try this in the Spring. How do you fish them???

Fathead minnows on a slip bobber. You have to get it out into the deep water.

Do you need a trout stamp though?

How deep of water and how far down with the slip bobber?

Ive caught trout in holland in the spring time but never in winter.

Your gonna want to bring a canoe, that fishing dock is full of ametures. Very frustrating. I fished a few times before I bought a boat. I don't think there is a boat landing, and that is why I suggested a canoe.

The fishing dock is great for kids, the sunnies come right up and kids get to catch, and see fish. Less frustrating, more rewarding to see young kids outside getting into an outdoor sport.

A few older kids usually come down and wing out a big chub, never seen them bring anything in. It would interesting to wade shoreline.

Pressure away from the dock seems to be little-nothing during open water season.

Yeah I don't have any kids, and us adults can drive ourselves where we most enjoy fishing. No sense going anywhere you know you aren't going to like.

Borg, if you are still reading this...

Is the winterkill on Portage fairly regular every year? I've tried twice and had no luck this winter... thinking about a third, but not sure if it is worth the sweat!

Any word on the big browns in Holland? Seems a lot are fishing, but no one is catching.

Not a lot are catching right now the dissolved oxygen in the lake had fallen to 2.41 mg/l, so they are probably stressed and not actively feeding right now. You can see them suspended just off the bottom a couple of feet, but they arent biting.

Portage, along with the other two smaller lakes (McDonough and Schulze) are pretty shallow and do freeze out. The DNR is now stocking them in the spring and summer to keep fish in there.

The dock was put in place mainly for kids to be fishing, we want as many kids out there as possible. I am trying to get another dock added to the park, either off of portage lake or the other side of Holland for the deep access. If you dont want to fish with the kids around, the park really isnt a good place to come to, thats really who I am trying to cater to here.

I have been checked by the DNR the last 3 years on Holland with trout in hand and have never had a trout stamp and never been cited. I would call the DNR to verify to buy a stamp.

Belly up to the dock w/ your portable for late season trout, they try to spawn in the fall so they are active now.

According to the regulations: anglers need a trout

stamp validation and a fishing or sports license when fishing in designated trout streams, designated trout lakes, Lake

Superior, or when IN POSSESSION of trout or salmon. Trout stamps are not required for children less than 16 years old, adults who are 65 and older, people fishing with a 24-hour license, or people who are exempt from fishing license requirements or who receive a fishing license at no charge.

soccerputz I would say that you were very lucky for 3 years. That CO should have given you the proper info. I hope now that you are aware, you will buy the stamp.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
