Annandale-Buffalo-Hutchinson fishing reports

One thing wrong with that Avid, population surveys of bass in nearly all lakes are very inconsistant due to where a great % of them live. (Way shallow). Can't conduct accurate surveys with shallow fish. Pike, Eyes, Panfish etc. Absolute great advice. Bass - nope.

You are right on Fever.

The DNR surveys on the website do not normally show good bass numbers. One thing you can do is read the fisheries specialist's comments and see what they say about bass. The best way for them to look at bass populations is by doing electrofishing in the spring. Sometimes they will tell you the number of bass per hour of electro fishing. They even give average size once in a while. This would be your best estimate on overall bass population. The normal trap netting and gill netting does not work well for bass.

Great lake to catch carp and catfish!! I have plucked a few this year. If you get lucky you might catch a pike or walleye certain times of the year. The Buffalo Creek flows into Addie. I have caught many walleyes out of the Buffalo creek. People might laugh, but it is true.

Our rivers around here have nice populations of game fish. If you know what you are doing, you don't ever have to go to a lake to catch walleyes or pike.

Avid

I agree Avid, there is some great fishing in our rivers in the area.

Big carp on Waconia and Howard lake. I've seen huge pigs cruzing shallows. Water is clear enough for night time bow fishing. If you need specific spots let me know.

Went out to a Wright County lake for about an hour this evening. Caught a few small bass and some small to medium sunfish. All caught along deep weeds.

Went out to a couple lakes today and it was pretty slow with the recreational traffic and sunny skies. Missed a number of fish that hit short and lost a couple close to the boat. Ended up with a 14 and 15.5 inch walleye, 4 pike, with the biggest at 28.5 inches and a dink bass. All caught on Rapalas in about 6-9 FOW. Good luck out there!

Went out last evening with the family. We had about 10 fish on, but only landed three largemouth. Decent size, but it's frustrating to lose that many.

  • 2 weeks later...

I did make it out on Sunday morning. I was fishing by 6:15 am and by 7:30, I had a bunch of 9-10 inch crappies. I switched gears and tried to find some bluegills. I ended up catching 8 gills with a lindy rig and small leech. I caught the crappies and gills off a hard bottomed point in about 6-7 ft of water. Water temps were in the low 80's and clarity was poor at about 6 inches. I caught a couple small eyes, but nothing decent. There was no wind and it made fishing tough for eyes. By 10:00, I was too darn hot and left the lake.

I am amazed at how aggressive the crappies are. These fish seem to be feeding all day, every day, all summer long.

Hope to get out this week!

Was out last night for three hours. Got humbled. Tried trolling cranks along a 7 to 10 ft breakline with the wind pounding in. Only had one pike, one bass and one crappie. It was a tough bite. Not sure what happened. Seemed like a good bet, because the weeds came right out to the break line. No eyes though?

Have any of you been on Belle lately? That is where I was. If someone would like to send me a private message and give me some tips on that lake, that would be greatly appreciated. I have not had any success out there and am wondering what depths I should be looking and techniques to be using right now. Thanks.

Well, I am a little disappointed. I sent out a message earlier in the week about Belle and no one is willing to help a guy out with any info whatsoever. Maybe nobody is fishing Belle this time of year, but I find that very hard to beleive. I am sure that someone has got the walleyes figured out on the lake for mid-summer.

Guess a guy just needs to keep to himself.

Fished an eastern Wright county lake on Friday morning.

Surface temp at 5:30 was 80 79 to 82.

Topwater bite was on fire during the lowlight period until about 7:30.

Switch to a shallow, shady side of the lake and fished in 3 to 8 foot of water along a weed mat that had a very defined edge with inside turns and points.

Scattered weed clumps out away from the wall of the mat.

Used Senko style baits wacky rigged and weightless Texas rigged, and wacky rigged Ring Fry.

Fish were cruising the edge of the mat and sitting just inside the edge.

Need to put the bait right on the edge and let is fall.

Most of the fish bit light.

Made it out yesterday mid-morning with my middle daughter,Rebecca.

We trolled cranks in the 9-12 foot range and had a mixed bag.I had 1 tiny bass and 5 pike that averaged about 3 pounds. Rebecca had 4 pike, one was pushing six pounds, and two walleyes [21" and 15.5"].

Not a bad morning hanging out with her.

Fished yesterday afternoon.

Pulled cranks in 7-9 ft amongst all the skiers, jet skies and joy riders. Used # 5 cranks in the red craw color. Pulled 4 walleyes in five hours. Very slow bite. Nothing big. 14 inches. Water temps seem to be coming down a little. Temps were 77 to 80 degrees. Fish were caught along a rocky breakline.

Two of my daughters and I made it out Sunday evening,we mostly were pulling cranks. we started out in 12-14 feet of water and went shallower as the night progressed, fished as shallow as 5 feet.As for results Kimberly had 1 perch and lost 2 fish that fought like decent walleyes,Rebecca had 1 perch and 1 [email protected]" and I had 1 perch and 2 walleyes[1@6"&1@13"].It sure was a great night out there could have fished all night, but the girls have swim practice at 7:00am weekday mornings, so quit at 10:15pm so they could get a decent nights sleep.

Tried Preston last night. Had my worst outing of the year. One bite, no fish caught. I didn't expect much in the first place, but nothing!!! Trolled cranks for awhile and then tried some jigging to end the misery. The worst part is I won't get out this weekend to get that taste out of my mouth.

I made it out three mornings this week after work[i get done at 12:30 am].

Day one; Tuesday morning, fished just over an hour from shore, two hits the first 10 minutes,no fish landed.

Day two;Thursday morning, fished a different lake from shore for an hour, nothing!

Day three;Friday morning,Hit a lake with the boat. First bite came just before the 3 hour mark,a 20" walleye, caught in 5 feet of water[ crankin'].I had 2 more hits in the next hour, but lost both fish in a couple of head shakes.

I really thought with the cooling water temps and favorable moon phase that I was going to hook many more fish. I am very bummed out.

Hey Workin,

Even the best of the best will have some down luck once in awhile. I think the weather has played a role in our demise. The weather looks consistent for the next few days and fishing should improve.

I think my dad and I are going cranking for a mixed bag tommorow. Should be fun.

My last two outings resulted in one 21 incher. Couldn't buy a fish. Its been a poor year for sure and others I've talked to feel the same.

I stopped by Collinwood today to see what kind of condition it was in and it looked like a septic tank.

Lmitout. Once again, thanks for your input on Lake C. I had just gotten off the phone talking to my brother and we had agreed to go up to Collinwood on Sun. Guess we'll have to find a new body of water to attack. Used to be that by now, Lake C. would be trying to "clean up its act", but this year hasa really been strange-in many ways. Not one of our greatest seasons-so far. Good luck to you if you get out this weekend.

The green slime has turned brown-ish and it wasn't very attractive at all. Reminded me of the run-off from an old cattle corral. Thanks field tile! mad The north landing had this feeling like it hadn't been used very much (weeds sprouting up in the cracks, etc). Just seemed abandoned.

Good luck to you as well. I'm not sure where I'm going to try since my last two outings were a flop. Pretty bad when you get to the lake at 7:30am and you're the first one there (on a weekend no less) and then when you leave in the middle of the day there are only two other trucks at the landing of a typically busy lake. Then you drive by other lakes and they're ghost towns as well. The fishing has never been consistently "great" around here but it just plain sucks now. You know it is pretty bad when people that live on lakes are trailering their boats a county or more away to find fish...and sunfish at that.

I guess that is why they call it fishing and not catching. smile

Went out this morning and only managed to bring a bass to the boat while walleye fishing. Had another fish on that felt like a decent walleye but shook the crank off shortly after it hooked-up. Thinking about selling the works instead of wasting my time trying to find fish in this area.

Made it out today. Didn't go to Lake C, but didn't have real good luck on the little lake we were on. Water quality seemed pretty good for this time of year. Caught a few little guys of various species, but again, nothing we would consider to be keepers. As usual, though, we did have a good time. Surface temp ran about 76 degrees, down a bit from what it had been. Probably won't get out for a couple of weeks. Maybe the fish will have the feedbag on by then!! Wishing everyone a great week.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
