There was an article in the Duluth paper last spring, saying they were looking at Cloquet/moose lake/another area but I haven't heard anything since.

I hope so...

I've been hearing that one for almost three years now but I haven't seen anything too reliable as to where and when if at all.

I think they should turn the aquarium into a cabela's. Cause then I'd go.

I have heard the rumor this week that for sure they are moving into that Industrial park north of Cloquet. Not the first time this one has circulated and probably not the last.

You know it would be nice but it would more than likely hurt the places we already have. These of which are not as big but will go out of the to serve you. Cabelas is a nice store to go on a trip but face it they are still a big box store. If you come back you come back. If not you dont. This is the 3rd time this story has come around.

From what I understand Cabela's officials were not happy about that leak to the paper last year from that Carlton Co. official. I too heard the Esko rumor, if it happens say good bye Gander Mnt., but Russ should be fine at Marine General, I hope.

I really dont think this will happen. Its been floating around too long with nothing done.

I will continue to support the "Locals" thats for sure. These guys are the ones who have gotten us what we have now and Im not going to quit shopping places like Marine General, Bait Box, Chalstroms, Minnowettte or Fishermans Corner because a big box store comes in.

I will however shop Cabelas for the great deals on stuff and the bargain cave. Gander Mt. better start getting things straight up there in Hermantown cuzz if a Cabelas does come that close to Duluth their bussiness will be gone and so will half their employees.

Like I say I dont see a Cabelas being in our area for at least 10 years.

same here. I remember when scott bought that old small engine repair building in pike lake. it was a small room with some tackle and bait and scott's room was right in the corner. That was back in 1980 something, early 80's, and I won't turn my back on these small local guys who have been helpful to me over the years for a big super duper store. marine general is another that I hit often. they know there stuff when it comes to the pond

They should put it in Cotton, that way us Rangers would have easy access too. But all in all I don't really care for the really big stores, takes too dang long to find what you are looking for.

Around Xmas I had 2 people tell me it was going in the Esko business park, that area that had all the earthmovers working last fall (and they were burying septic/water lines along hwy 61 to it as well). But all work came to a standstill about that time, and nothing more has been done. I dont think that location is big enough for what a Cabela's would want (tho in the last month or so there has been a large commercial area selectively cleared on the NE corner at the Esko exit also)

I'd have to find a whole lot more will-power, having to drive by that every day. I like them for their camping gear more than anything else.

was at the store in Rogers last week and talked to one of there pro's and he asked was I excited to get a store in the Duluth area???? According to him, they had already purchased the land and was just waiting to see what would happen. He stated that Cabelas often bought land just for investment and not a store.

One thing that caught my attention is the store in Duluth would not have the Bass assortment that Rogers has, he said each store is geared toward the local area fishery. He said most of the tackle would be for the eyes and muskies and lake superior.

This salesman ran the Cabelas tent at the Bassmaster two weeks ago.

They put Gander Mnt to shame. All of the salesman in each dept were more than happy to help you, I was not in one dept more than a couple of minutes before I was approached by a salesperson not like Gander where you have to look for somebody to help you and hope that they know what they are doing.

I do not think they will hurt the two local stores we have that I go to. Their service is to personal to have an effect on me. Will still go Fish. Corner or Russ before I would go to Gander or Caballes>>>later the load

I was told that it would be going in around Black Bear. They want to get the 210 and 33 people that are going North.

A Cabelas would take a big chunk out of all the local shops and would close probably a couple of the ones just hangin on now.

Thats if its within 45 minutes of Duluth. If its within 20 minutes it will really hurt especially the 1st year.

I don't think it would hurt the local shops as much as it would hurt Gander Mnt. Please don't getting me starting on that rip off joint. Anyway it more of a tourist and fun place to go. Plus they do have good stuff in reloading tools and bullets and all that stuff.

Thats true, I still would go to Russ or Scotty not unless they did not have what I wanted or they were giving it away. Maybe a few of the other stores would start to cater to us and not just try to make a quick buck because they are close.

I think the honest (bait) stores and not the counters will do ok.

What ever happened to Ganders bait store????>>>later the load

local is always better, but most people just can't drive by the larger stores for there selection. But both larger retail stores can get you on there prices. I was at cabela's and bought some vexilar accessories, and a week later stoped at gander and the normal price was 5-10 cheaper then cabela's. Just like any store got to know what you are shopping for...

I am not a big hunter. i will go and enjoy an occasional bird hunting in the northwoods, but that is the only hunting i do. if i was a big time hunter, gander or cabelas would be my second home. but i like going to scotts, chalstroms, or log cabin on lotw and know the people by name and be able to pick their brains for info. i rarely have a compelling reason to go to gander

From what I have heard they were going to go to Moose Lake but someone in the city blew that deal and Cabelas went with Esko supposedly. I too agree that Marine General shouldn't have a problem. Cabelas is nice and big but price wise they are not the cheapest.

I cant see Esko happening. Cabelas in my mind would like to have a site that is visible from 35. I dont think the Esko site is visible enough. Wouldnt be my 1st choice thats for sure.

Plus I dont want Explorer going bankrupt or divorced because its so close to his place.

Cabelas would not steal me away from the fantastic service that I get from the people at Marine General and I don't step foot in that place up the hill anymore. Just my 2 cents.

I second that Tullibee. Marine General always has what I need and if they don't (rare), they'll order it for me and be happy to do it. Every time I go to one of those larger chain stores I'm disappointed with either the selection or service, usually both. Its amazing how often the larger stores are out of what I'm looking for!

I really don't like cabelas much anymore for these reasons:

1.) high prices

2.) So much selection it is actually frustrating to shop there now for me

3.) There is never an employee free to help me

4.) Seeing all that expensive high priced stuff makes me depressed because I can't afford most of it!!

Give me the local bait shops and sporting goods stores and I am happy.

The big tent sales and bargain cave would be my only draw. Although they do carry way more and better walleye plastics than anyone else I have seen.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
